Hi all,

I've been a lurker for quite some time trying to learn and improve. I love playing the Mage, but I'm having some real issues. I'm in a friendly guild and they really don't say anything, but I really don't feel that I'm pulling my weight. Perhaps I just truly suck at playing a Mage, but I'd like to think I'm just doing something wrong. I respect the opinions here, and just want to improve, so let's have at it!

We did some pretty basic 5 man instances the other night and I just barely out-damaged the Tank. We were running with a Holy Priest, a Prot Pally, a Hunter, a Prot Warrior, and myself. The hunter was tops on the meter (which I think is OK?), and I was second just barely ahead of the Warrior...and I mean just barely. We swapped back and forth on the meter quite a bit. I have tried to assemble the best pre-raid gear I can from the (http://elitistjerks.com/f75/t37146-best_non_raid_mage_gear/). Still a couple of pieces short(chest and boots...saving money) but pretty close. Here is my amory link:

I know I still need a couple of enchants (Still saving $$), but I've gemmed everything I can at this point.

This is my rotation: LB (as the Tank aggros), Scorch, Scorch, FFB, FFB, (Blow timers on boss...(Mirror Image, Combustion, Trinket, on a macro)). After that I just try to make sure I keep Scorch up, LB on the target, Pyroblast on HotStreak proc, and spam FFB. Am I doing something wrong? I just want to help the group and make sure I do my part.

Thanks!

Not too much else you can do there. Granted FFB is pretty bad in 5mans because of how fast the kills are. It really shines in raid content tbh.

This. I do really well in raids, but my DPS falls quite a bit in 5 mans. The only really good thing about FFB in 5 mans is that your cooldowns will be used for most of the fight, which is nice.

3 second cast times are the bane of mage existence. I always feel the same but in the end, what gets the job done. I really don't think too much about 5 man dps and equate it to raid trash as far as importance. I think I recently reverted to scorch spam for 5 man trash.

Thanks everyone. I guess I'll have to wait through some more 5-mans as we build toward raiding before I'll see the real effectiveness of the FFB build. Maybe I'll try the scorch spam in the meantime to see if that can boost me up a bit in the 5-mans.

Thanks!
