Confessions of a noobish hunterFollow

Hello there huntery folks. As you might've read in that gramatically abysmal thread I just put up in the general forums, I've only just rolled a hunter. Now I've read through the sticky and read up the wiki on shot rotations, but I was left with a couple of questions which I figured I could ask here;

1. As far as shot rotations go, I've got the idea that the most effective way to shoot is to time my Arcane/Aimed/Steady shot right after an auto shot. Am I Right?

2. When I'm engaging a single mob, I now often jump away from the mob, timing my jumps so that I get a couple extra auto shots off. Is this a good idea or am I simply going through way too much hassle for no bonus at all? Perhaps I should simply melee the last ~20%?

3. This question seems dreaded, but I'm going to ask it anyway... What spec should I go? The thing is, right now I'd like to take it slow and have my spec mainly give passive improvements so I don't get washed over with extra shots and stings right away (Even though Survival looks like my thing in the end). What I'm currently working towards is this; I just want the improved mark because I can't stand such a trivial ability costing mana, and I've already somewhat learned how to deal with Aimed Shot. My problem is that I'm not sure whether Aspect Mastery is worth it or whether I should simply continue in Marksmanship or Survival. Add in the fact that I'm leveling my first toon on a PvP server and I get completely confused about what to go for. I am not interested in the 'most effective' spec or the one with the highest DPS, I'm just curious to insights on what I've conjured up so far and what proper hunters think might work best for me.

4. Tying in with question 3, what about my pet? At the moment I run with Tearclaw, my trusted Raptor, and I seem to be doing well. How much does my pet matter? Am I going to be a huge lot better off by grabbing for example a turtle? Or is Tearclaw here to stay? Also, is there any logics behind at which level I get pet talent points? Tearclaw is level 17 right now and hasn't earned one yet.

In advance, thank you for your insight =)

I am no expert either but i can say what i do.

1. as far as i know now you cannot clip any shot so its more just spamming whatever shot you have that does the most damage or that is off a cooldown , i find i get to use few special shots as mobs tend to die fairly fast anyway.

2. Melee can be done but the pet should be preferable to be doing that , i tend to have hand weapons for the stats only and quite often they are well below my level so i will rarely do any melee as my shots always do more damage.

3. I would say you are missing a lot of damage with your blend of talents , best one to level with is BM or MM is viable i would say with my Hunters usually going BM there is no complicated shot sequences , its more or less using auto with whatever special shot that does more damage plus when you get it the big red Raptor for maximum damage.

3a. I see you are on a PvP server so you need the guys that do PvP to suggest the better tree for your level but i guess survival at least at later levels would be the way to go.

4. As you are on a PvP server and intend to aim for survival spec i would suggest a pet that can trap would be useful and i would say a read up on the petopia site may help you decide what pet would be best , if you went BM a pet that does high damage can and will almost equal your dps if you just did auto shots , that is from checking with recount with my hunters that range from 30-71 and just using standard ammo for my level , so yes the pet is very important for a BM hunter , for MM the real damage is yours so the pet is just to keep the mobs occupied but of course the pet can do decent damage so is still useful , survival spec looks to take a while to get going but is still possible at low level and a pet like a spider will trap mobs for you so is very useful i would think as i have not yet tried the SV tree since all the changes.

At the moment i would say one of the best mid level pets is the gorilla with its great health and its thunderstomp which unless it gets nerfed will usually hold the attention of a whole group of mobs without serious damage so saving you any damage , it is my pet of choice once my hunters hit their 30,s but these days any pet is good to level with .

Pet talents start at level 20 and then 1 every 4 levels , i believe a total of 16 unless you go 51 points into BM which gets you another 4 pet points.

BM is a great leveling tree and I would go all BM at least until you get "the beast within" especially since you are on a PvP server. Having that ability when you get ganked is a nice kick to the face. Here is a decent BM build to shoot for:

BM

Now, how I would go about filling it in is simply taking the idea of making your pet as strong as he can be. So the first 5 points I'd put in Endurance Training, followed by Focused Fire and Thick Hide. This gets you to the next tier and put all 5 points into Unleashed Fury. Then one point in Improved Mend Pet & 4 points into Ferocity.

Now you can start playing around, but I would go with one point into Intimidation then 2 into Bestial Discipline. Now we need to get into the next tier, so go ahead and put your 5th point into Ferocity and then one point in either Aspect Mastery or Improved Aspect of the Hawk.

Next go 5 points into Frenzy. As a side note, you won't see any end game raiding builds with 5/5 into frenzy but since your crit is so low at this point in leveling, I think it is fine to go 5/5 and it gets you to the next tier.

Get yourself your big red pet with Bestial Wrath next and then dance a jig. Sit back down and keep leveling and put your next 3 points into Ferocious Inspiration. Now to get to the next tier, throw a point into either Aspect Mastery or Improved Aspect of the Hawk (whichever you didn't do before)

Almost there, so the next 5 points should go into Serpent's Swiftness which will enable you to get The Beast Within when you ding 50.

From there it is up to you, you should have a good feel for the hunter by then and can go your own route. MM wouldn't be bad to increase your crit 5% or if you want an exotic you can continue down the BM tree.
