Arms as a tank. No really, I'm not drunk.Follow

Been thinking about rolling a warrior alt.

Want to go arms but I would like to be able to tank heroics and OT raids.

Parry, dodge and defense gear without itemization spent on block is what gave me the idea. The gear really only has recently become more common with the advent of DKs. The new stance penalty reduction helps as well.

Is this a realistic idea?

I have never played warrior beyond level 10 or so. I have read up a bit and to someone with a minimal understanding of the class it seems possible.

I had this cooked up for a potential build. link

Is a doable thing? If so how wrong is the build I linked? What sort of rotation would I be rocking?

Just seemed like an interesting project.

Thanks.

I lied about the drinking.

Lots and lots of revenges... Followed by the occasional shield slam.

I think RPZip was saying some time ago that that kind of spec was the HIGHEST TPS spec in PTR for 3.0.0

It is doable, I don't know if you'll get outside of doing 5 mans (heroic or otherwise) with a spec like that and tanking.

You'll get more DPS/TPS in full raids by sticking to a more reasonable prot build, probably one with deep wounds in the spec (15/5/51).

It's just not synergistic... Your specing for 2h weapon damage but putting on a shield? This doesn't work well for specific roles, such as MT for raid or OT for raid. Sword and board alone makes prot a winner. On top of that, increases to SS damage, along side other general DPS/TPS buffs, makes a more pure prot build more attractive.

I'm not saying your wrong, and many times in TBC I was tanking arms spec for heroics for guild.

Spec is one of the least worrisome things for me when I consider who's tanking for me (which doesn't happen often, but it did happen). Can they tank? Do they know how to? Hows their gear? Last on that list is; Hows their spec?

If you can hold threat, -AND- not die, -AND- not make your healers sweat? If the answer is yes, it will work fine. 2ndly DPS is a concern. Can your spec dish out as much DPS as another spec? Its more of an issue now than in TBC or Vanilla.

No shield. Twohander. Overpower and stand dance Revenge. Mocking Blow kept on CD. Heroic Strike like it was Maul.

Not a MT build by any means. An OT build for sure. But built to OT raidsville and possibly tank heroics.

If he who shall not be named is still around I would love for him to way in.

You wont do very well without a shield in a heroic. It's just such a huge armor boost. Avoidance can only last until that two/three hit combo. Especially with the way diminishing returns works out. Your losing out on a lot of mitigation without a shield.

2H won't increase your revenge damage and you're missing a huge chunk of mitigation with giving up a shield, not to mention Shield Slam, which you no longer have to spec for. In a fight where you're taking hits it could work pretty well with 1H+Shield and spamming revenge/heroic strike (with Glyph of Revenge) with Shield Slam thrown in when available (and Sunder to 5 stacks). The biggest problem that I could see is Rage generation (natch) and some survivability from Prot.

I have a sneaking suspicion that a Prot build would be more effective even as OT, but I'd be curious to see it in action.

I think that what you are describing is simply this : A Death Knight

The DK class offers unique characteristics while tanking... they are mana/rage mechanism indipendent and abilities are based on cooldowns meaning that as an offtank the class rocks.

This. I mean if you want to try then by all means go for it. If it's for the style then I would just tank as a DK.

I keep forgetting they added big DRs. O well.

I have a DK that is parked in HH that will eventually be a tank. Just had been toying around with the Arms idea for a bit and wanted some opinions.

Thanks. :)

arms tanking with unrelenting assault and revenge is quite a bit of fun. you literally can get four-five revenges while its lit up without too much trouble. great single target TPS.

but yeah, you need a shield to tank heroics.

I like the idea of the Unrelenting Assault tanking spec, and might try it for a fight or two when 3.1 hits, but I just don't like the idea of being completely useless on trash and most boss fights to increase single target DPS for just a few fights. If I were trying to push records on Patch, it would make more sense to me, but I'm not. Still though, I can appreciate that Prot does have some choices like this now. Tank specs have been cookie cutter for so long that it's nice to see a bit of variation on the traditional builds.
