I spam Maul and Swipe 90% of the time.

I could make a macro, get one of those bird things Homer uses when he got fat and started working at home and not even be present for most pulls.

The other stuff is more for bosses, the few harder pulls and if I'm feeling fancy. Usually I very busy watching Family Guy or something to do much beyond Swipe and Maul. My threat goes through the roof during commercials.

It help that I have everything keybound and don't have to look at what keys I'm hitting.

Heh, the other night on 10man Patch I was Hateful tank and I was right on the MT's threat and we had a significant lead over DPS, so I announced I'd BRB and went and got myself another scotch. Came back and was still well ahead, popped berserk and caught back up to the MT :)

After all, you can't expect me to tank without a drink!

This happens on trash as well. Bosses usually just Patch as his attacks add to your threat but if I have a big lead on other bosses I always have enough time to grab a beer or roll a smoke if I need to mid fight.

I just have this impression (right or wrong) that even though pally tanks have all of these extra abilities like aurelius mentions, if things are going well they actually use less keystrokes than us bears... if you get what I mean.

I was just intrigued that two random other players, who were more experienced at end-game content than I was, had both walked away from bears in favour of pallys. And on my server anyway, while I have been levelling I can count on one hand the number of bear tanks I've grouped with in instances. So I was getting a little concerned. :)

There will usually come a time during most boss fights where I could stop everything and just keep Holy Shield up and nobody will come anywhere close to passing my threat total. Loetheb is a good example of that...by the end of a heroic Loetheb fight, I'm usually sitting on a total of 1.5-1.8 million threat. The last time we fought him, the offtanks missed a spore and it broke next to me when we had Loetheb at about 40%. I joked that I could probably go make a snack and still come back to an enormous threat lead (including a lead over those dps who didn't get the crit/no threat buff.

The main thing for me, however, is that even if I've got an insurmountable threat lead, I'm still a component of the dps on a given target. In 25-mans, it's fairly common for me to sustain 2500dps on trash and any boss that doesn't have me running an auxiliary role (ie. tanking Understudies on Razuvious where the goal is to hold them but not damage them any more than is absolutely necessary). The only way I can do this is to keep my rotation going, which involves activating a new ability every GCD.
