Getting pets to 80Follow

So I finally got to 80 on my hunter, and shortly thereafter got the pet I'd been using to level with to 80 as well, but now I have 4 pets in the stables (2 of which I use for groups and raids) that all need to be leveled up to 80 as well. In BC I used to go down to SMV and farm marks of Sargaras to level pets, since there were a lot of mobs in a small space and they respawned fairly quickly.

I'll probably take the same tactic this time around - find something to farm and level my pets at the same time - but I was curious what everyone else does. Do you take the grind/farm route, or do you just continue questing and switch pets as they level? Or do you do something else entirely?

I take them along for easy questing and farming. Keeping myself stocked on Mega Mammoth Meal and worg tartar means lots of grinding.
I'll still bring my gorilla if the solo quest is more difficult.

#3REDACTED, Posted: Feb 11 2009 at 12:37 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Just checking... Are any of the remaining pets below lvl 75? If so, release them and retame, instantly putting them at 5 levels below your current level. Sure can save a lot of useless grinding. ;)

Don't spread misinformation please.
Pets can never be more than 5 levels below you.
Even if you'd tame a lvl 5 pet at lvl 10 and then dump it in the stables, once you get it out at lvl 80 it'll be lvl 75.

I have a chimaera in the stables now that is still @ 74, and could have sworn I've had him out of the stables a couple of times in the past few weeks. As I only have him for the looks (rare spawn from Netherstorm) rather than function, I haven't put a whole lot of effort into him. Maybe I'm wrong and I have a bugged pet... or it could be that I'm mistaken about taking him out of the stables recently, but I'm sure I remember hunting gorillas with him and thinking that it was a good thing he was pretty, but I was simply speaking from experience.

Having said all of that, though, I do admit to using that experience rather than information out there, on Petopia and such.

Is it true that the level 10 pet in stable will still be level 10 when you are level 80, until you pull it out of the stable? In other words, if I look in the stable the pet will show his level at the time he was stabled?

The level that a pet appears while in the stable is pointless. Once you select and pull him ouot he will be NO MORE THAN 5 levels below you.

If at level 10 I tamed a leve 10 cat, stabled it and leveled to 80. The cat would be level 10 until I pulled him out, then he would be level 75. Not sure how much more clear we can be. YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A PET AT YOUR SIDE MORE THAN 5 LEVELS BELOW YOU.

*edit* Hectic day, short answer, Yes.

Interesting question: when you pull the level 10 pet from the stable and it becomes level 75, does that give you all of the pet talent points to put whereever you want them?

Yes. Just as if you had leveled that pet to 75 by hand.

A level 75 pet is a level 75 pet is a level 75 pet. Just like a level 20 pet is a level 20 pet is a level 20 pet. They ALWAYS have the same amount of talent points for their respective level. They are a level 75 pet, in every way. You now have 13 or 14 points to distribute where you want them, just as if you tamed a fresh level 75 pet.

So correct me if I am wrong, but you are saying that an elite pet will have better stats than a regular pet unless he is level 20 or level 75?

I'm joking of course (just in case someone new to this conversation comes walking in). This thread really needs to be closed.

Elite pets are exactly the same as regular pets once tamed. There is no difference. Read up over at Petopia. All these details and more are answered there.

The pet level changing is good to hear. I like spider pets for pve but haven’t figured out exactly which spider look I wanted. Good to know that I might be able to pick up a lower-level pet at some time and get him to at least 5 levels below me very fast.

As for how to get him to max? Of course you shouldn’t take a very low pet to an instance with you, because his lower level may cause inadvertent aggro with surrounding mobs, not to mention doing little dmg against 80+ elites. Spend the time to get him to 1-2 levels away from you before taking him to an instance.

Otherwise, there are still many things to do solo, even when you get hit 80, that you can take your pet for. The meat farming, leather farming, even continuing quests or doing dailies, or running into caves to do mining, should give plenty of opportunities to level up a pet that is not at max.

But wait? Whats the best pet?

Lol just kidding. I would suggest grinding in Storm Peaks for the reputation items and meat and stuff.
