I am just returning to my Hunter after a long time running a different class (Druid). I've been doing some reading and I see that the perfered pet for "tanking" is the Gorilla. My question is why is a the Gorilla better than a Bear? I am currently BM spec'd (level 50) and I have a Bear and a Cat as pets. Started with the Cat than tamed a Bear for better multi-mob leveling.

Also, if I want to get rid of a pet, say the Cat, how do I go about that? Do I just dismiss it?

Thanks for any information you can give.

K first off wow, you should really know how to get rid of pets you don't want by the time you're level 50. Okay rudeness aside, there is either a button in your spell book or you can right click your pet and choose the abandon feature that will make your pet disappear and leave you an empty slot for a new pet; like maybe one of the new exotic pets once you hit northrend (i prefer the huge rhino's just for kicks)

People choose the ape because they have a great aoe that helps, thunderstomp if I remember right.

Again as many people on here will tell you, please check out the faq page, yes it's severely outdated, but great minds are working on updating it. Plus there is always petopia a site that any good hunter should have bookmarked and memorized for all those great "what pet is best" questions that get posted a lot on this forum.

Oh and just clicking on dismiss will just send your pet back into hunter pet limbo where you still have it, but it just isn't around to fight for you until you call it back.

I am currently a BM spec'ed level 40 Hunter. I use a Bear and a Lion as pets. Alternating depending on quests or instances. I like those and don't believe I will change them.

As to your question about getting rid of a pet, just right click on the pets focus pic and select abandon.

Gorilla is far better tank than a bear, threat generation is 30-40% higher (as a fresh 80).

Kelonem, thanks for the information. That's exactly what I was looking for.

trollover, thanks for abandon inform. The reason I didn't know it was I had never needed to know before. Plus for all I know it changed since the last time I played my Hunter. I did read through the FAQ's which is how I knew people prefer Gorillas. I didn't see anything with regards to abandoning pets, or a comparison bewteen Gorillas and Bears. Bears have an AoE called swipe. I'll take another look though.

As for Petopia I've looked at the site but not indepthed. I'll have to take a closer look. As for "what pet is best" posts I admit I didn't look past the first page of posts.

Swipe hits only mobs in front (3 mobs I think) but thunderclap hits everyone around. At 80 it doesnt matter what pet you use when soloing. I think its better to get real dps pet like raptor if you are not BM specced.
