80 DK... what now?Follow

So yeah. I just hit 80 on my Death Knight. It's actually the first class I've taken past 70 as well (Rogue was 69).

My question is... what now? What kinds of things should I be looking to accomplish? I would like to try raiding and all that eventually but I doubt my gear is up to raiding standards with most of it being green quest rewards... few blues here and there, nothing major.

Any particular pieces I should be looking for? Should I scour the AH for epics? I would also like to maybe try Arena as well someday, but again, not really sure how I should prepare for all that kind of stuff.

I know it's noobish but I've never been this level before and I'm not really sure what's next. It all seems a little overwhelming. Anywhooo...any advice anyone could give would be much appreciated.

Start enjoying the actual game?

Do dailies for gold (and eventually epic flying), do some PvP (Wintergrasp is pretty fun, same with Strand of the Ancients), run some instances and heroics for gear.

It's way more fun than leveling.

I actually have to kind of disagree with Theo, but of course, he's entitled to his opinion..at least until the aliens take over. I actually love leveling. I have three more 70's that I'm working on right now.

But yeah, to the OP, I would avoid the AH epics unless you have the gold to throw around. If you're going to tank, get the tempered saronite gear, its a good price for good gear, run some instances, get some more stuff. If you're going dps, there's another saronite set that I cannot recall the name of, sorry. But it looks pretty cool. Might pick it up for an off-set.

Try everything.

Then you'll know what you want to focus on.

Read a bit about everything and then give 'em a shot. Not a ton of research is needed but get some basic info on raiding before joining a PUG or look up PvP before launching into battlegrounds. There are mountains of info here and plenty of links in the threads elsewhere for more.

Well now you have hit 80, if your not a fan of leveling then I'd say this is where the game will really start for you and you can have a lot of fun!

It depends what you want to do really. You can be a raider, group with people and go and conquer raid dungeons, or you can be more of a PvP'er. I guess you can even do both if you want. The best advice I can give is the same as Theroin, just try everything and soon enough you'll learn what you enjoy and what you dont enjoy.

If you decide you want to raid then 1st of all you need to decide what role you want to play in the group and with a DK you get options:

1. Tank - The guy who basically protects the group, takes the beats, makes sure he has aggro on mobs, allowing DPS and healers to do their job safely. If this is what you want then from the sounds of things your gonna need to upgrade your gear. I'd say start by scouring the AH for Tempered Saronite gear. As said above this is a decent bit of gear at a good price to start you off in the right direction.
Run normal instances 1st to try and get upgrades on your gear and also learn how to tank properly, learn what your moves do, learn to keep aggro on your targets. What you want to aim for 1st is getting your deffence up to 535 for Heroics (or 540 for raids) this will make you immune to being crit, a real must have for tanks. When your deffence is that point, as a DK you really want to work on +hit, prefferably without gimping your stamina too much though. Then get yourself into heroics to get better gear and progress to raiding standards. If it doesnt go well to start keep at it, tanking isn't easy to start so just keep your chin up and always come back here to seek advice.

2. DPS - One of the guys who deals out the damage in the groups, takes mobs down. Again if this is the way you want to go there is a cheap blue set you can buy from the Ah again (made by blacksmiths) and you want to focus mostly on +hit, str and attack power. Research the different specs and builds, try them all out if you want to see which one you find more fun or which provides you with the best results.

Obviously that then leaves you with PvP in the forms of Battle grounds or arena. This is something I'M not going to comment on as I've never been a fan, so I know nothing about it. Not enough to advise anyway, especially from a DK point of view.

Always feel free to ask questions, there are some really helpful people here who know what they are talking about. Theroin is one and another is a guy called Dilbert who helped me a lot. Good luck anyway, hope you enjoy your new DK, come back and tell us what you chose and how it goes :)

My question is... what now?

Before WotLK, the question was "I've hit 70 with my <insert class here> - what now?".

Before TBC, the question was "I've hit 60 with my <insert class here> - what now?".

Next expansion, the question will remain, even though the cap may change. You aren't alone, and this is a common question.

There is life after cap. The main ways to go are Raiding and Arena, but there are other things, like achievements. Did you hit cap with any leftover quests? try finishing them.

Thanks for the great responses, that really does help.

A lot to think about but I like what Theo said about starting to actually enjoy more of the content of the game besides the grind to the cap. I do enjoy leveling but I'd like to give it a rest for awhile :P

So yeah, I guess I'll just jump into as much crap as I possibly can for awhile, see what I like and don't like etc... then go from there. Very simple solution that I should have come up with myself =\

Thanks for the gear recs as well, at least now I have some sort of idea on what I should be looking for. Thanks again all :D

I used to love leveling, too. That was like 3 or 4 years ago when I was leveling my second or third character to 60, though.

You know, sometimes when levelling you just don't have the time to have a good look around the place. Take time out to have a tour round. I have found areas I skipped past before. Also take a look upwards in Outland and Northrend and fly up there and take in the views from up there as well.

The game is huge and getting levelled is one element of it.

Earn gold for some much needed speedier transport.

If you liked levelling then look at building your reputation with factions, sort of like levelling but with certain ones you open up some additional rewards i.e. mounts or tabards or even a nice piece of armour or weapon. OK for some this may mean having to do dailies, but you get gold and rep for those, so all is good.

Head to some old school instances and solo them, because you can.

Join up with friends and try to get better gear from raids etc...

The nice thing about being 80, and being a DK is going to a battleground and not seeing people in there who are leve; 70, in say the 79s bracket. You know what you're up against, and its may the best person win.

Turn on some Redjumpsuit Aparatus go into a Battleground and wreck stuff :o) (Especially Rogues, they don't like your Runestrike at all)
