This post brought to you by boredom, illness, lack of sleep, and seeing something I'd never seen before.

It's pretty cool. I have a "regular" tank I run heroics with who's not in my guild. Most times, he prefers to run with three mages, and, since the three of us in my guild are as thick as thieves, we go with him and drag just any old healer who can heal through our pace, which isn't hard to find nowdays. :)

I was late to the game, but I do remember when it was more difficult for a mage to elbow her way into a raiding spot, but, well, those days are gone. :)
