Leveling/instance running as a resto shamanFollow

#1 Feb 03 2009 at 9:12 AM Rating: Decent
Hi there. I've leveled my shaman up to 60 as enhancement or elemental and i've really desired to try out the resto tree. I understand that enhancement/elemental are faster leveling but I've always been intrigued by healing in groups..so i will want to run alot of instances while not questing.

My questions are:

1. Should I stick with mail gear in instances or should i get a cloth set of gear to heal in since the stats tend to be better?
2. When not running instances what is a good way to go about questing? A 2hander with windfury? 1hander and shield? spam lightning bolt?

Always prioritize mail. A great deal of the cloth in WotLK is geared primarily towards caster DPS, and some of the pieces that aren't will have spirit instead of MP5 which is very poor itemization for us. Use cloth and leather pieces only to patch holes in your gear until you can get good mail.

You're basically going to want to quest like an Elemental Shaman. Keep your shield on, put Flametongue on your weapon instead of Earthliving, and use your DPS spells to the best effect you can.

I'd probably wait till 68 or 70. Not too many people run outlands instances anymore, except ramparts. I levelled from 70 to 80 as resto, and I did it in 10 days. It doesn't take that much longer.

Anyways here's my rotation. It may need a little work, so someone correct me if I'm wrong. I put out 850 dps the other day when doing the cooking quest- rhinos in Storm Peaks. I checked my dps, cause I was curious how I compared to dps classes (see dps thread in general for more info). I'm not sure if 850 is good or not, but I digress.

Open up with 2 lightning bolts. You may be able to get a 3rd one in. I often do a 3rd one even though I get a little bit of pushback. Saves me from having to use a searing totem (which seems to be more trouble than it's worth sometimes). Then flame shock, auto attack, then renew water shield (I do searing totem first if I'm using it). I don't use any other totems, but my mp5 is exceptional. I can battle 5 mobs at once and be at full mana at the end of the battle. I actually do dailies with almost all resto gear except a few pieces of hit rating gear (think my hit is at 98) and the lightning totem (ranged slot) from mechanar (outlands instance). You may want to use mana totem until your mp5 is good. If you are battling an elite, lay all 4 totems down. Next, let the flame shock tick a bit, then when the mob is about 1/4 to 1/3 health I lava burst them. I usually let flame shock tick to about 35 or 40 (picture the thing like a clock) then hit lava burst. If needed I earth shock to finish the mob off. When battling multiple mobs you can use magma totem, I like they reduced threat on this. Mobs still sometimes destroy it though. Also use chain lightning for multiple mobs. You can use it for single mobs, but I prefer not to.

As for gear stick with mail. You don't want to try solo questing with cloth lol. And past 60 mail gear is actually designed with resto in mind(not stupid vanilla wow mail gear which has spirit lol). Go for spell power and mp5. Stam and int are nice too. Crit is nice too. And later on you'll start seeing haste gear.

As mentioned earlier use flametongue. And use water shield. Use earthliving weapon when healing. Use the best spellpower mace you can find (with mp5 too if you can find it) and the best spellpower shield you can find. If you can afford enchants put mostly SP ones on. You can put haste on cloak. mp5 on chest, vitality on boots, int on shield.

If you don't mind suffering through occasionally drinking water between mana tide cooldowns, using earth shield instead of water shield makes you pretty much indestructible

well, on my ENH shammy, i just bought/quested a gear for healing with mixed pieces of mail, leather, cloth. I could heal in instances in the outlands, NO PROBLEM. U don't need to be resto to heal at that level. Im 74 now and still not much problem with healz at all.

ull be amzed with how many people actualy whisper you cause they neeed a healer.

lvling with enh is the fastest, hands down, no arguements.

The answer to all gearing questions in WoW is always the same: it depends.

Getting to the point where you can effectively heal a heroic in WotLK is largely about spell power. The fights are fast and mana regen is not a problem with the fast cool-down on mana tide. So often taking the highest spell power point avaiable to you in some slots is the way to go, even in the 60's this can be true. But if your armor or stam drop too low, you'll be in trouble, so be very judicious in which pieces you decide to take leather or mail in. If you're walking around in a robe, you're probably making a mistake. But a cloth hat may be just what the doctor ordered.

As resto losing a bit of armor isn't a big deal, but losing alot is.

As for how to solo, take your one-hander and shield and think of yourself as a prot warrior with spells. Toss on earth shield, wade into 3 or 4 things (or pull them with spells), chain lightning them to get their attention, drop stoneskin, mana, and magma, start swinging your weapon. Cast a CL now and again to keep them off your totems, drop a heal on yourself and refresh earth shield as needed. Lava is fun and keep flametongue on the weapon. If your mana gets down to about half, flip to water shield till it's topped off again, use earth shock or wind shock to interrupt casters and bring them into melee range, and watch stuff die.

Single targets you're not particularly efficient, but with earth shield you make a pretty fair aoe tank against normal mobs a level or two beneath you.

I leveled from 60-80 as resto, finally going elemental at 80 because of guild situation on dps/healers for heroics. My mage and warlock are both 70 now. Leveing them is of course much faster than a resto shammy, but i die a lot more. To make up for the lack of damage, you have...

--Maybe 1 death per level at the very most while questing.
--You can almost always get a group quickly for instances.

I usually start off with 2-3 lightning bolts. I have a 1 handed axe and a Warr Sheild for dps. i use the flame wep. i do about 700 damage per hit with both white and fire damage combined. I usually keep the target flame shocked. This works better than going with all lightning bolts, in my opinon, because you arent getting any pushback and you can conserve mana. You can use a lightning sheild for extra dmg instead of a water one.

It did not take quite as long to level as you would think, and never dying was pretty sweet.
