Pet holding AggroFollow

#1 Feb 02 2009 at 10:14 AM Rating: Decent
Hey all,

So I recently made the switch from BM to Survival, more just for fun and to try something new than to min / max. Most, if not all, of my play is soloing, exploring content and an occasional 5-man PUG. Currently level 72, with avg quest gear.

I have noticed two major differences in the change.

1. My pet just cannot hold aggro. Granted, if I wait just a few more seconds, pulling aggro is usually no big deal since at long range the beast usually dies at my feet even after pulling aggro.... kill shot as it is running at me... probably would look really cool in a movie.
2. I seem to be running out of mana much faster and drinking much more. Generally, I have to drink every 3rd kill.

My question is, how to manage the solo aspect of this build a bit better. Which pet shold I be using? (tenacity, ferocious, etc.. and with any specific talent builds?) Do I auto shoot just a bit more? My crits are hitting pretty hard for my level and I pull aggro after the first SS.

Or, is this just the way the build is? It is fun, just a little different.

Thanks in advance,

Olinax (H - Silver Hand)

oh don't drink for mana, just switch to Viper for one mob and keep on keeping on. I do keep a stack of drinks on me, but I rarely have to stop and drink.

I just solo the old tBC style of solo play I used to as SV.
Send in pet while you start nuking and don't even bother with trying to have the pet hold aggro.
No pet can hold aggro vs an Explosive shot crit, and there's very few mobs who will survive long enough to hit you anyway.
If they happen to make it to me, Immo trap > Disengage > Explosive.

DOH!!! Viper...this is exactly the right thing. Thanks for the responses. I like the play style and look forward to playing around with it.

Aeth had great advice. In general, when people ask why such and such pet doesn't hold aggro- I would like to ask them this. If you blast the crap out of mobs, is your tank able to hold aggro? The answer to this is normally NO. I don't care what spec of hunter you are, if you don't mitigate your DPS, you will pull aggro. To these people I remind them of this.

We are hunters, we DPS from range. If you don't let your pet build some type of aggro then you will be in melee, it's that simple. Luckily Blizzard has implemented some mechanics for hunters so that we may stay in range. When I was running survival, this was my normal fight sequence.
1. Send pet in
2. MD your pet and use your high damage spells- Aimed Auto Explosive can generate a lot of aggro. (single target DPS obviously)
3. Dont forget FD, use it when you can. If you are volleytanking, use it after the first volley, you shouldn't regain aggro before all the mobs are dead.
4. Drop a frost trap, when you get multiple mobs attacking you, strafe-kite until either FD or your disengage is off CD.

If you do this you shouldn't have any problems with aggro management. I realize this might not have been the fastest way to farm mobs, but it works.

(If you have multiple mobs aggro'd with low health I also enjoy Explosive and Deterrance)

Thanks Browninguns,

It has been very interesting, switching from BM to survival and having not played my hunter for some time. Everything you guys are saying, frankly, I should know.... especially since my main is a "Tank"!!!!

MD my pet, feign death, traps, kiting, viper, etc.... hunter 101. BM was literally easy street for so long, then a short hiatus, amazing how much an addled brain can forget so easily.

Kudos again to the allakhazam community. Reach out for help, and you get it...

Thanks again,

See ya in Northrend.

Hey man, no worries! Sorry for the double post in another thread, but you guys were asking about the same thing.

One thing I would like to add about pet aggro- and this is old school. In the time where people were all talking about the jumpshot, and lack of hunter skills to do so, I was kiting in my own unique way. I realize that we want to stay at ranged- but I never fully got the jumpshot mastered and I mostly use a strafe-kite method. One thing I hate worrying about is terrain while I kite so I tried a different method... aggro bouncing. I don't mind being in melee so I would sent the pet in on that elite mob, allow him to take a beating and pull aggro into my trap. While the mob was trapped I would heal my pet and back up into range. When my pet was back at full health I would send him in again and start over. This worked great for me for many a levels... just wanted to share that to the community.

I have the same problem with my cat. I asked a guildie and he suggested switching to a hyena. They have a tendon rip attack that will slow the mob. This works at times. The pet uses the attack too early in the battle to slow the mob down when I pull aggro. Also, it will use the attack when the mob "runs away in fear" which is pointless for ranged attackers.

By switching to the hyena, I also found that the pet was lacking some DPS. The cat had bite and claw, the hyena has bite and tendon rip.

Got my hyena in Dragonblight around the wyrmrest temple, there are also some in the Onslaught (??) areas.

Good luck

Concussive Shot still works for mobs that run. Your pet doesn't need to do the slowing. Higher dps pet would allow the mob to be killed before it got far anyway. When I'm slow grinding, Morris and I have them dead before they take 2 steps.

If you are fast grinding, you can set focus on your next target and when the first mob 'runs' concussive shot, send your pet to the next target, then you down what's left of the first target. That let's your pet build aggro on the next mob while you're still tracking back from killing the first one. Let your pet get a head start on the next mob while you're taking one down and you'll never have to worry about aggro loss on mobs.

On bosses, it's an entirely different matter... but it's already been covered by the posts above.
