Question about FrostFollow

#1 Jan 31 2009 at 9:40 PM Rating: Decent
Alright, I just started up frost and have a few questions about it.
1) What is considered a "Chill" effect? Does Frostbolt give off this effect? I'm asking due to the Permafrost talent.

2)I currently have 5 ImpFrostbolt/ 3 Iceshards/ 3 Precision/ 1 IceVeins. What talent should I get next?

3)Between IceFloes, Permafrost, Piercing Ice, Frostbite, and ImpBlizzard, what is the most important to get talent for leveling/PVE?

4) I'm leveling with gear from quests and drops only, and I was wondering when can I start AOE Blizzard mobs? Can it be done without Ice Barrier?

That's all I can think of for now. Mainly a lot of questions based on which talents to grab as I level.
Thanks a lot for the help guys.

A chill effect slows down the target, turning it blue. Frostbolt gives this off, assuming you don't have the glyph. Improved Blizzard adds it as well, as does Frost/Icy Armor.

Piercing Ice, although if you can afford it right now, I'd take the 3 out of Precision and put them into Piercing Icy, using the other 3 talent points in Permafrost.

Piercing Ice. To quote Filterspawn, "More Damage = Good, mmmkay?"

In theory, you could start it when you get Improved Blizzard. However, you would not have Ice Barrier. It CAN be done without Ice Barrier, but you'd need to have a perfect routine down for it to compensate for the lack of range, protection, and speed that you'd get at level 40 (the minimum level that you can get Ice Barrier). Due to how the system has been reworked, AoE Grinding isn't nearly as effective as it once was.

As everything else was pretty much answered, here's my take:

I would pick up frostbite, the survivability that you get when they are frozen in place is excellent, and of course fill out shatter as soon as you can. Piericing ice is good, but it becomes a lot better when the spells hit harder, as 6% of 100 isn't very much compared to 6% of 3000. 3/3 Precision pretty much guarantees against resists of an equal level, up to you if you like it or not (which you already took it). Icefloes is good to get your CD back from frost nova and icy veins, I would take that after filling out shatter probably. ImpBliz is great for AoE grinding, but as has been stated, it is not as amazing as it once was, questing is far more efficient. And if you want to do it, wait until AT LEAST 30 so you can have your mount. I would wait until 40 to get the barrier, and I would make it debatable on if you should pick up shatter barrier.

I guess your questions have been answered already but thought i would add my thoughts.

I would use the items search here for weapons and armour upgrading as there are some nice items to be had from quests you may otherwise miss or from instances ( i never used to do instances but have recently discovered just how good the BoP items can be ) and as you need loads of intellect plus i suggest spell power as well ( the harder you hit the faster they fall ).

I wonder also what trades you have as i would suggest enchanting will give you some decent extra stats and of course if you end up farming mobs with blizzard you will have plenty to disenchant i know i do and the extra makes decent gold as i level.

As for talents i see that has already been answered , go for anything that adds to your damage or that freezes mobs while you gain some levels as i find that a life saver a lot of times but for real AoE farming in later levels i know most respec their talents to leave out the freeze effect as it will make it harder to get large groups of mobs in one spot.

As for the AoE on mobs , that takes some practice but is great fun and fatal if you make a slight mistake ( done that a few times ) so i would suggest some practice on mobs below your level first , what i did was take on mobs about 5-6 levels below me in small groups until i figured out just how to do it without getting killed.

As i did not know how long you have been playing and have no idea if you have other characters i hope i have not just repeated what you may already know.

that used to be true, but now that imp blizzard can cause frostbite and can now crit it is fine to have it.

There is an awesome Video called "in frost we trust" that can give you pointers and show you how to AOE mobs, pretty cool actually

Here's a link to the AOE grind video. The spec info is out of date, but the rest of the information is pretty good.

http://http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-903331917281359369

I've watched people do this, and it works with practice. I'm leveling my Mage, but I don't bother trying to AOE grind, unless I get into a situation with multiple mobs, and throwing down a couple of blizzards can be a life saver.

Made it half-way through lvl48, last night, and can't wait till I get to where I can do some of the stuff that gets posted in this forum.

That video is great!

A little dated, but the first (lvl 1-20) section basically sums up lvls 1-60 now, particularly if you use the recruit a friend program.
