I've recently switched my forgotten lev 51 warrior to protection to learn how to tank and possibly level him all the way up to 80 and Raids. My gear is poor but as I'm just starting BRD and ST I expect that it will upgrade fairly quickly. I'm sure that there is a tanking article somewhere in here but I don't have the search function and I wonder if, like other classes, the talents have changed enough to make earlier advice just a bit dated.

Here is my link:

My question is what is my rotation in typical instances to maximize threat and damage?

I usually charge, slip in a concussive strike then the AOE thunderclap and often alot of taunt and/or sunders when mobs peel off of me and start chasing dps. The problem I see is that I spend so much time and energy (and rage) that I'm way, way low on the dps meters. Is this normal? I understand that my job is to hold aggro and to leave DPS to the DPS'ers but I really think I'm a bit low. At level 51 I just picked up Devastate; that looks nice and I expect to roll with something like charge/TC/Devastate and some sheild slams mixed in when off of CD. Am I missing anything?

Any help is appreciated.

I can't really help you because I leveled mostly as a dps spec before leveling to 80 in Northrend as a Prot Warrior.

Basically, my rotation would be:

Ranged weapon pull / Heroic Throw > Charge (if you have Warbringer) > Shield Block (try to slap on Shield Spikes if you can't get Damaging Shields...which I don't think you can at lvl 51) > TC > Revenge > Shield Slam > tab Devastate. Having at least 2 sunders on every mob and keeping TC and Shield Block (Sword and Board is God sent) on cooldown would be good enough to keep them off the squishies and your healer. Oh, and throw in Cleave / HS if you have access rage to burn.

As a prot warrior, your dps will not be as high as a true dps class but it is higher than it was before patch 3.0.

My best advice, and by no means you should play that way, is to play a dps till 70 and then switch over to Prot. You'll see a lot of difference in terms of aggro holding and abilities.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the response (finally!).

I'm actually level 57 now and about one quick BRS run away from going to outlands. I actually prefer now to quest as protection (though I loved when I was a DW killing machine!) as it helps me learn the buttons on what is really my number 3-4 character. The funny thing is I'm having bad luck replacing the Aegis of the Commander, a level 39 sheild, as nothing has dropped for me in BRD (I lost out on a shield to a pally a couple nights ago). I also use the 2-handers that dropped in BRD (I have 2 of them I think) when I want my questing to go a bit faster but I love the patience I can have even with my crappy shield.
My DPS truly sucks as a Prot but it is kind of fun to spam Devestate on 3-4 mobs and thundershock/cleave and come out of the battle at about 80% most times w/o any true heals. My other toons are an Elem Shaman (80) and Rogue (71) and Warlock (71) so it's a bit amazing to see how much damage(mitigated damage) that I can take. I am just now 3/3 on that board/sword talent so I'll see how that goes 57-58 prior to outlands and DK hell.
