Training my Pet questionFollow

First off, I would like to say hello. First post for the WoW forums as I am coming from FFXI to play with my brother on WoW. Did Mage and Warrior long time ago up to about 40 but we always stopped playing for some reason. Here for round 3 and went with Hunter, obviously.

I am Blood Elf, lvl 18 at the moment but trying to figure out how the pet works as far as the talents go. I have tried reading the Good Intentions Hunter Pet Guide but that just list the abilities. Have also read through the sticky at the top but still don't get it. So far the beast trainer doesn't give me any options really. I have a Cat, Spider and a Dragonhawk. All lvled and always kept fed. How do I get points to use the Beast Training tab under the Abilities and Talent screen? Do I need to find all these beast/animals and either see them use the ability in combat or charm it? How do check my pets loyalty to me? Just looking for a few pointers.

Thanks

EDIT:
May have answered my question with a little more reading I just did. I have not been back to the pet trainer that gave me quest to tame since the initial 3 quests. This may be my issue. Again, any pointers are welcomed.

Most pet guides are outdated at the moment.

Loyalty: There IS no loyalty. Instead of slowly gaining affection for you as you adventure with (and feed, feed, feed) your pet, it is as friendly as it is going to get towards you as soon as it is tamed.

Training Points: Likewise, there are no longer training points that are build up based on loyalty level and pet level. You do NOT need to go out and tame other pets to learn abilities, your pet will learn all basic abilities (cower, growl, focus dump, special) as it levels up.

Talent Points: A new addition, pet talent points let you customize your pet's abilities and stats to a certain extent. They work just like your own talent points with the exception that each type of pet has access to only one tree. Your pet will start getting points at level 20, with more every couple of levels (not every level like you do) and at level 80 will have either 16 or 20 points to spend, depending on your own talents. For more information on the pet talent trees, see Petopia.

Pet Trainer NPC: A little obsolete--they no longer teach you new abilities to teach to your pet. They still will let you pay a small fee to retrain your pet, however, starting at 10 silver or so--the only difference is that now it resets the pet's talent points instead of resetting its training points. Also note that when you buy a respec for yourself a respec for your pet is included free of charge.

Very helpful and exactly what I was looking for. This shows how behind I am on WoW and how some information is out of date. I was beginning to think I was doing something wrong. Makes since now as I kept reading about at lvl 70 you would have used or have 350 Training Points and couldn't find much on Talent Points and still didn't have any at my lvl.

I feel much better now and very much appreciate the information. More or less everything is focused around Talent Points and pet abilities are naturally learned based on their type/lvl.

Thanks

So as I sit here at work I wonder if my pet sits at home with no points in any of his abilities. After respeccing your character does it automatically reset all the pets abilities as well?

I'm pretty sure that when I've gone from deep Beast Mastery to a spec without the extra 4 talent points, it's reset all of my pets' talents, even the ones in the stables. I'm not certain about other spec changes, whether that would have an effect on stabled pets as well, or only the one by your side when you respec.

Perhaps it was because of giving up the 51 point talent then. I went from MM to BM to SV the last few times but was never 51 points in on BM. I sure hope I havn't been a noob all this time running my pet with no skills...
