Questions from a non-mageFollow

The highest level I've ever reached with a mage is 39 and I haven't played more than 5 minutes since TBC, so I know that I know nothing about current end-game. However, my guild has a couple of mages that appear to have lost their direction and both have come to me (I'm helpful) for assistance.

I'll post armory links when I get home but for now, one plays frost and one fire. I know that fire has several options that make it good for raiding but is frost viable?

Are there any cookie-cutter talent builds for heroics and/or raiding that someone could point to, please? Also, what rotations work well in general?

As for gearing, neither of these guys has a single WotLK faction at exalted so which would you consider best to start looking at, in regards of championing reputation?

I desperately want these guys to have fun but also to pull their weight in raiding, as soon as possible so I hope someone will have some ideas how to get them started.

The two major ones are Kirin Tor (for the weapon (revered), head enchant (revered)) and Wyrmrest (nice epic boots).

Other than that save up badges (normal/5man heroic) to get a sundial, the belt is great from badges as well.

point them to my FFB thread about rotations for that or my arcane thread if they are interested in that.

There really is very little viability right now for frost in raiding, its dps and self-buffs are horrible compared to the alternatives. It is pretty much:

1) Arcane
2) Arcane/Deep-fire (better when you get more gear)
3) Frostfire

From what I've heard, much to my dismay, Frost is no longer a viable raiding option. That's a damn shame, too.

Edit:

Damnit Anobix...:(

Anobix pretty much covered it however frost mages can function to some extent in raids.

A frost mage can do zombie chow control solo on Gluth and function as a replenishment class with their elementals refunding 7.2% of everyone's mana per minute while the ele is out. Also they can apply winter's chill (+10% spell crit on the target) so they can function in the role of gimp dps, spell crit debuff ho, and replenishment.

The actual dps a frost mage does will be nearly doubled by a similarly geared arcane mage but the dps meter doesn't tell the whole story of what a frost mage can add to a raid group. Still, in most cases, it's not worth specing into frost unless your raid composition could benefit.

Thanks. I figured from Anobix's post that it wasn't worth putting up these guys' armory pages because arcane is just so good at the moment.

As a guild we haven't got to Gluth yet. A couple of our guys have been included in other guilds' Naxx runs and cleared it but we're still trying to get the Heigan Dance down pat. However, these mages are still sorting themselves out for heroics but I hope that won't take too long.

Rate ups for your kind assistance :)

I'll agree with the others above and I'll give you a few reasons for it.
Naxx Boss fights right now (and Malygos..and Sartharion if you try with adds)
or even Archavon are considered dps fights (thats what my guild considers them anyway)
cause in most cases you will have a timer to beat.
A low dps specc like frost may bring the 10% crit or even the mana regen but that you can also get from other classes/speccs.
See loatheb for example (on 10 man) you have a 5 min timer and it's a FFB heaven cause of the crits.
you get extreme mana back and many instant pyros.(i found ignite was doing like 35% of my damage in this fight)
or you can see Thaddius, Patchwerk, Maexxna (if you don't have well geared healers you are gonna miss the fast dps)

I have raided with all 3 speccs on every fight and right now i'm arcane.Although i miss my FFB specc I can tell you that with arcane they can max their dps even without the end-game gear.2 min evo can do miracles for their mana too.

I have no idea if you plan on doin 10 or 25 mans but if you don't have the gear for it you may find it usefull to max your dps.
Just my opinion though so don't start a "hate" post about me :P
