Took a spanking in hero CoSFollow

#1 Jan 25 2009 at 4:30 AM Rating: Good
First off here is my armory: Rakkal

Our party setup was:
Myself (tank)
Shaman (heals)
Paladin (dps)
Death Knight (dps)
Mage (dps)

We first attempted the timed run on CoS. Did very well through the first waves then got to Meathook and he wiped us, so we gave up on that effort and continued on to finish the dungeon. On Meathook he did crit me, but he wasn't missing/parrying either. healer said I was just taking way to much damage. So after meathook we downed the second boss without any problems at all, and made our way into the house/back alley segment. Passing through the house I died twice in the same exact spot which is the long halway after the stairs. Once again it was a avoidance issue. Last attempt we got out of that hall and went on to down Mal'ganis...

Now is it me or does CoS seem to be a place where DK tanks very good in? Or is it simply a gear issue? I am just starting in heroics and working on up'ing my gear, but at the same time trying to keep the 540 defense.

I've done CoS timed, even have the mount to show for it, so no, it isnt a bad place for DKs to tank in. Heck, DKs are great AoE tanks so its even better than with a warrior if you want to make the timed run.

I guess your avoidance isnt high enough to tank it without taking a lot of damage, so my advice...gear up a bit more, but you are on the right track :)

Don't be throwing your gearing strategies overboard just because of a single wipe.

You have plently of defense, enough to drop some of that in favor of other stats. What you're lacking is stamina. At level 79 I already have almost 2K more health than you.

Your trinkets are your weakest slots right now. 20 parry rating was great at level 55, but at 80 it just plain sucks.

I haven't tanked heroics yet - obviously - but I have healed them. I put stamina on a tank over everything else because it gives me more time to take care of everybody else. This might have been where your healer was struggling. Not so much the damage you took, but the damage you took as a group. Tank blames healer, healer blames tank. It will always be like that, so I wouldn't give too much on his accusations regardless.

Oh.. make sure you keep Blade Barrier up on bosses. It sorta comes automatically on trash pulls thanks to Pestilence and BB, but I found myself actually having to pay attention to that on the bigger guys.

Not so much related to your problem, but I found Sigil of the Frozen Conscience to be excellent for my tanking. More initial threat while pulling, and more damage when refreshing. Would only switch back to the BS sigil on (raid) bosses. You'll rarely - if ever - use BS on trash, but IT almost all the time.

Looking at your armory your defense is way high, you only need 535 to be uncritable in heroics so you should be able to swap out the gargoyle rune for the swordshattering one. Also your trinkets aren't doing that much for you, so that would also be a place to try for upgrades. There is a nice +def one from regular Halls of Lightning which shouldn't be too hard to find a group for. Also I would stick to easier heroics like UK, Nexus, H VH and what not until you've replaced some of the crafted gear. Heroic AN also has a nice trinket and tanking belt.

First off, as frost you will take more damage than unholy. bone shield still is very good for mitigation purposes.

After that, your gear is somewhat tight. you have way too much def at the moment. you should be focusing on stam. if 20k is your tank gear + frost presence stam then that is way too low. an extra 4-5 k will make a world of difference in survivability.

I'm willing to be that the healer is spamming lesser healing wave to keep you up, which is very inefficient. more stam would let the healer comfortably spam chainheal or healing wave.

I also do VERY good in CoS, in fact the only heroic i have any 'issue' tanking is when we are trying for the achievement on the first boss in H-AN. without a shield you just get pummeled.

I'd recommend running vault and OS (both 10 and 25 man versions) as you get a lot of easy opportunities for gear upgrades.

yeah im in the process now of changing out my gear. On the trinkets, yes I totally agree they are wrong or outdated. One trinket I have wanted for a long time is the Seal of Pantheon, but the little **** wont drop for me (been on 10 HoL R and 5 HoL H). I was also thinking of getting the dodge trinket from the heroism vendor.

First off, this is my Dk tonk: http://armory.wow-europe.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Emerald+Dream&n=Eliani (blood presence)

On that char, i allready tanked some of the harder heroics, like Occulus, CoS and stuff.
The problem i encounter is mostly an avoidance once, tho i recon ur health is a little low aswell =)
You aim should be getting good trinkets, as u can see just doing MgT hc for the mount could give u a good temporary solution :P
the other trinkets would be from HoL normal (take note it DOESNT drop on heroic, ever), Azjol Nerub Heroic (2nd boss = stam+ shielding trinket, really wonderful), Dabiri's Enigma from quest in netherstorm, can be a semi-good temp replace for ur current ones

Also, if u cant spare the badges for the Defense rating Sigil, go to Grizzly, do 3 quests and buy one of the sigils from the venture coins from "Grizzly" D. Adams, correct lootlist can be found here. Those wont take u more then a minute or 10, and they would be a splendid upgrade :P

Hope this helps =)

Yeah I know the trinket does not drop in heroic HoL, it just doesn't like me lol. My hp atm is 22.3k and its very low, too low for 25naxx or vault. Like I said im working on it. I am trying through all of this to maintain 540 defense.

is that 22.3 k unbuffed?

You should be fine as an OT for vault (not sure about naxx) if the group has a priest + pally w/ kings. Those two buffs combined will get you to around 25-26k hp.

Hell I'm sporting ~25k unbuffed. (although I probably have a lot more avoidance than you do).
Either way run sarth and vault every week, both 10 and 25 man.

It's definately your gear. Don't take this as a negative, but Meathook is one of those anomaly bosses. He hits like a mack truck. My advice would be to wait til you have a handful of epics before trying to do that instance timed. If you thought Meathook was hard, you'll have problems in the Gauntlet as well.
