Raid DPS HelpFollow

#1 Jan 22 2009 at 7:05 PM Rating: Decent
I'm an 80 Mage and am just now getting into raiding. I wasn't satisfied with my damage so I respeced to fire.

Anyway, I do about 1.1-1.2k damage. Here's my character on the armory. http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Rexxar&n=Evilant

I'm looking for any advice that would help me improve. Any suggestions on specs, any gear I could upgrade to (that doesn't require LOADS of time), any rotation advice as well. ANYTHING you think that would help me out.

My rotation is something like this. Living Bomb > Scorch x5 > Spam Fireball (While casting an occasional scorch to keep the crit rate up). And whenever I have the chance, I cast my free Pyroblast.

So anything you think that could help, let me know! I'm completely new to raiding and any advice would help greatly.

Thanks!! :D

What glyphs are you using?

For fire you should have: molten armor, fireball, and imp sorch.

Although you are frostfire spec so you should be using frostfire bolt (with the glyph of course not fireball). Read the elementalist/frostfire bolt post that I made.

That looks like a frostfire bolt spec there so I'm going to recommend the following changes to your glyphs and rotation:

Glyph of Improved Scorch, Glyph of Molten Armor, Glyph of Frostfire

For rotation my usual approach is...
vs mobs with less than 90k health: Frostfire spam -> instant pyro when it comes up -> More frostfire spam
vs mobs with greater than 90k health: Scorch x2 -> Frostfire spam -> instant pyro -> More spam

This is for trash, not bosses. The reason I don't bother with scorching things with less than 90k health is because they're usually dead before the improved spell crit matters so I've just wasted my time where I could have been shooting things instead.

Also I don't use living bomb as part of my normal rotation, the global cooldown used for that could be used for more frostfire bolts which will ultimately give you more damage output than living bomb will... There are exceptions of course where you want to be using LB as well, but for normal "tank and spank" single target dps, LB is a waste of a GCD.

For your gear, the first thing I recommend is getting a whole lot closer to the hit cap than you are now. All the +spelldamage and +crit in the world won't matter if you can't hit anything.

My guild requires that dps classes be able to put out sustained dps of at least 1500, other guilds probably have higher requirements, looking at your current stats my guess is that you're not there yet. You should be fine for heroics though and I recommend doing those... a lot. Get revered with Kirin Tor and exalted with Sons of Hodir for your head and shoulder enchants (Kirin Tor also gives you a nice dagger)

I'm by no means the final authority on anything, so other people's opinions may vary.. I'll link my armory here too though for comparison: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Malorne&n=Zeryn

Good luck

On raid boss fights you couldn't be more wrong. LB (if applied appropriately) will make up about 10% of your total damage, beyond the fact that it can proc hot streak. If you still disagree post up some meters and some math and come back with it, otherwise realize that living bomb is a big dps increase on almost all raid boss fights.

Boss fights are one of the exceptions I mentioned (even though apparently I didn't spell out what I considered an exception... my fault there)

Typically in a boss fight you're not able to stand completely still and shoot things, I use opportunities like that to put up LB unless I'm in a fight where absolutely no AoE can happen.

But you shouldn't only be using that opportunity, every time that it explodes the next opportunity that you have to put it back up you should.
