Leveling as Prot is no longer significantly slower than leveling as Ret. Your build as you level should probably just be building towards your "final" build at level 80. The only real debate is whether or not to take Kings, and when to take it if you do decide to take it at all.

Your first 5 points should probably go into Divine Strength which will up your damage potential and threat as well. After that, it is easiest just to slowly build toward the build you are shooting for at level 80 and thereby minimize any need to respec.

If you are strictly going to solo on the way to 80, you could go for a hybrid spec that incorporates a lot of Ret Talents early on, but that really isn't necessary.

If you level as Prot, there really isn't anything that can kill you in all of Azeroth unless you take on something 5+ levels higher than you or you take on a pack of 8 mobs when you really can only handle 6 at a time, so your spec doesn't have to be "perfect" as you level up as a Prot.

I leveled a toon from 1-30 as Prot and only put talent points in the Prot tree from 10-30. This really didn't hurt me much at all as far as leveling speed in my opinion.

This is very true.

Honestly, I leveled my current Ret Paladin as Prot originally. I went from 1 to around 55ish as Prot, then switched to Ret, then switched back to Prot in early OL (59ish?), then back to Ret at around mid-60s to 80. Every time I was Prot, I went purely down that tree (except for the last time where I got to the bottom, then went 5/5 Deflection and 1/2 Improved Judgements).

Prot is very viable, I usually buffed myself with BoSanc and SotR and went auto-attack/judgement happy on a mob. Always ended fights high on HP and MP. When I finally got Hammer of Wrath, things started going a bit faster. But it wasn't until Hammer of the Righteous that things started flying by. It cost so little mana, but as an amazing damage dealing tool. I enjoy Ret now and I definitely kill much, MUCH faster when it comes to 1v1... maybe even 2v1. But I miss the days where I could have 4-5 mobs on me and I would kill them all with only a minor dent in my HP and MP.
