Let's talk about Arcane, baby! 3.3.3 ready!Follow

#27 Jan 30 2009 at 10:51 AM Rating: Excellent
Our excellent friend Kyth <Fusion> has been nice enough to put together a guide and even a video on how-to Arcane mage in 3.08 (post hotfix etc).

http://www.stratfu.com/strats/ArcaneMage

That basically explains what I have said, but it looks a lot prettier and there is even a video!

I will add it to the main post.

@ anobix

ty for that video and breakdown on arcane.

I think it may have actually conviced me to lose this non-challenging FFB spec/rotation.

I actually like the arcane rotation a hell of a lot more than the ffb one. It isn't as much based on RNG (I guess with the exception of MBAM procs) it has a fairly steady dps level (I hit around 4k last night with our Sarth 3d attempts and Sarth 2d kill) -- could have done more, I should re-glyph into molten armor instead of mage armor, but just ask for an innvervate if I need it.
#30 Jan 30 2009 at 11:41 AM Rating: Decent
yeah RNG is amazing isn't it?

Sometimes on patchwerk im 5.8k dps (rarely though) and then other times I am 4.4k.

Yeah I tend to have bad luck when it comes to it, ending up with 10-15%+ less crit than the other FFB mage (when I was FFB) when had only had 1% or whatever more crit rating than I did. He would have something like 60% and I would have 45%.

I pulled 6.8k DPS today on the Maiden of Grief and landed a 17k Arcane Blast crit. All I can say; it was hawt!

Should one try to get some mp5 gear before speccing arcane?

I haven't bee having any issues with mana. If you are using mage armor with the glyph should be enough.
#35 Feb 05 2009 at 2:47 PM Rating: Good
I would not go after any gear because it has mp5 on it, but if there is an upgrade (dmg+haste wand fading glow for instance) then it is fine. Just don't steal the gear from healers.

Oh and Mage armor should really only be used if you have to. Molten is better by a decent amount barring extremely long fights with a lot if movement preventing 2min evocates.

Updated first two posts, and added helpful posts dealing with the 3.09 changes from EJ.

Still FFB, but as arcane I would be drooling over http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=44002;source=live

Dropped last night, but I passed it to a warlock :-/ I'm still saving up my "Gimme Gimme" points for either Illustration or Turning Tide

Good luck on your Turning Tides, y'all. We've still only seen one, so I'm really glad I rolled well.

Good luck! I've seen it drop once and a pug got it.

There's always tomorrow, though. :)

self-bump. updated with proper glyphs, will add 3.2 information as it comes in officially from the PTRs.

Anobix, I have to question the talents.

Magic Absorption first. I have never even looked at this talent, do you really get hit by enough spells, or is this for fights like Hodir(if you can resist that even)?

Also, Magic Attunement. I know getting extra range is decent, but worth the points?

No Student of the Mind? That's a good chunk of Spirit/Crit lost...

Just wondering!

Oh and I saw ABar is back?

Oops, I need to fix that. Magic absorption, as you guessed is good for fights like Hodir or other ones where you can get full resists (mimiron as well) but other than that it isn't very helpful (thanks for pointing that out, switching the talent points to sotm for both builds).

OK I have a question concerning the rotation if no Mbarr, do you AM anyways, Abarr, or AB again? I have read the discussions about not using Abarr unless moving or finishing, but I have it macro'ed and the rotation seems to work. However looking for clarification to improve my DPS.

Currently I do AB3+ Mbarr AM, repeat or if No Mbarr, then I Abarr w/PoM (Macro'ed) then hit Instance AB to start rotation over.

The rotation generally works fine if you just always 3xAB - AM, regardless of procs. You can use Abarr, but it is pretty costly and not really worth the mana cost for a relatively small dps increase. If you have the mana to spare (you are in burn-mode) you can continue ABing as arcane blast spam is our highest dps 'rotation', but obviously will put us oom in about 25 seconds.

Quick bump, tihs will be updated for 3.2.2 in the next day or so. Right now the current easy rotation is ABx4-AM, but there is a lot of talk going on right now of how to use procs, set bonuses, and probabilities of getting missile barrage.

This is now relatively up to date, I have edited a few things for ease of reading. Let me know if you see any issues.

I have a question. Last night I was bored because my server was having issues, and this place was kind of slow, so I decided to go browse the mage forum over at wowhead. There was an interesting thread over there with a mage newly going arcane, and a few people piped up that Incanter's Absorption and Frost Ward are really awesome, particularly in ToC. Topic

One of the people over there with quite good gear and raid achievements said this:

Quote:
IA + FW is absolutely a very powerfull combination.
Also IA is OP for Twins..

(p.s. both fire/frost ward minor glyphs are of some use with this build)

Cause the aura u pick up ABSORBS the damage from the opposite color. Basicly 100% IA uptime.

Pick up some orbs and ur DPS/Damage will sky rocket.
I always played with AI and Warding every 30sec is good.

Fights i use me wards or have uses for IA are:

VoA = Kolaron

Onyxia: Fireballs has an AoE splash / big adds Fire AoE / Breath (no worry's with Ward up stand under her so u only take 1 tick and survive with more than enough health) PuG'z might say "u fail standing in breath" but showing damage taken of recount could shut them up.

ToC 10/25
Gormok / Worms / Icehowl / Jaxx / Fire Champions depends on Setup / Twins = Absorbs due to Aura

Uld = on top on FL / Razor / Ignins / Mirmiron / Thorim Hard / Hodir / various trash pulls.

Naxx = Sapp + KT

Not only i get SP also get some mana back from using me wards.
I can really recommend to use IA Talent.

Has anyone tried this, or known anyone who has tried it? I'm always up for trying new things to up my dps. One problem I can see with taking advantage of IA when there isn't any fire or frost damage going on, is having to use mana shield to get the dmg bonus which really drains mana. That probably doesn't happen all that often though.

I'm IA/ward specced and it does work well. Especially when you have a friedly priest to throw shields on you or a healer with the legendary.
#51 Oct 08 2009 at 3:05 PM Rating: Decent
Okay sweet. I'll go ahead and respec that for our ToC raid tonight. Do you think it would be a good idea to say something about that in the first post?

Also, I looked at the difference in crit with 3 points in SotM (which is what I had before) and without, and it was less than 0.5%. I can't believe I wasted those three points for so long. >.<
