Dmg Mitigation for DPS in Heroics?Follow

Backdrop: I log on my arms warrior and a guildie immediately asks " DPS OC so I can get my heroics achievment?" I respond by telling him that I'd be too gimp as I'm just starting to gear up for heroics. He tells me to come anyway because the rest of the group is rock solid.

So I resigned myself to being the weak link, telling him to feel free to replace me if my DPS output didn't measure up.

Turns out that he was right, the rest of the group was beyond rock solid. They were some of the top raiders in my guild, and while I'm sure they were getting a chuckle out of my DPS, I don't think it was dragging them down too much.

However, I was extremely disappointed in the brutal ***-kicking I was taking in regards to the damage I was taking on trash fights. The healer (the guildie that asked me to come) just could not keep me up, and it wasn't for lack of effort or skill.

Is Oculus just that rough on melee DPS? Or do I have to start worrying about mitigation as well as DPS output. I kind of assumed once my gear got me to the necessary damage output, it would have sufficient mitigation.

I avoid that instance like the plague, because it annoys the hell out of me, but from what I recall there is a fair deal of AoE in it that can do a number on melee. Especially the trash before the second-to-last boss.
