First Im not using a cookie cutter build, I like to make my own. However I put decent dps still (usually #1 or 2 overall in raids, gotta love OP volley, and usually 3-4 in 25 man raids on bosses w/ all heroic and badge gear (no naxx gear except feet) against people in naxx gear.) average DPS in raids against single target mobs runs 2500+, If you want to see my build, I can link it later. right now it is 11/60/0 MM. My question, which would be better, the ignore 6% armor or I can pick up 3% more damage with improved tracking or I could even drop silencing shot and a point in rapid recuperation and get the complete 5%. Or drop Silencing shot and Rapid recuperation and get 2% damage bonus and the ignore armor. I hate dropping Silencing shot, however I don't PVP and Im just not seeing the mobs that need to be disrupted from a heal or other spells, nor are tanks needing me to pull casters to them with it like I did a lot in BC heroics/raids.

Edit: Small part made me look a little arrogant, that isn't me.

3% more damage is much better than 6% armor ignore.

And your build most likely sucks.
Saying you end second, third or whatever doesn't say anything.
I can do 4 times the damage of someone else with 0/0/0 if that person is bad enough.
And regardless of what dps you do, you'd do more dps with a "cookie cutter" build.
Those builds are standard because they have proven to be the best, and speccing them isn't following the mass of people, it's getting the most out of your character.

Following the masses isn't why I'm avoiding the cookie cutter builds, I enjoy creating my own build and tweaking it here and there as I gain more knowledge from playing my hunter and researching sites like this. To me personally, finding someone else's build and using that kind of cheapens an aspect of the game I take pride in trying to figure it out on my own. For some, this may not be the case, and as long as they enjoy playing their character thats cool with me. However I will say, I enjoy how I play my Hunter and I believe I still carry my own weight in groups. Reason I asked this question was because I couldn't the numbers on how the mobs armor effected damage vs. damage increase.

I also want to add that I do not feel as I am a better player/hunter etc because I enjoy making my own build as I learn more, It is just something I do enjoy, so please do not take it that way. I am just doing my best to understand the full mechanics of my character and applying a build someone else tells me to and using the rotation they use does not help me to achieve this goal.

However, part of the game can be played by going online and reading about these skills and how they are used within builds. You do not have to recreate the wheel to understand it. All of the cookie cutter builds have detailed explanations with numbers to back up why they are better. Its not as simple as someone just telling you what to do. They tell you why to do it.

Maybe you could start with a cookie cutter build and some (small) experimentation from that to see what happens...

If you plan on doing BM, this is a great time to test given all the changes that just occured, or to try out MM or SV since the nerfs didn't hit them as hard.

I like to think that my originality counts for something and I am completely ignorant of the fact that I inconvenience other people in a raid who truly do research and impliment the right strategies. I count on them carrying me well into the fugure as I watch from behind.

I justify my "originality" by playing the "it makes me feel good" card but deep down I know that I am not the best I can be because of this.

Fixed.

That said, the people who are on top are on top for a reason. Use the energy you spend on your "creativity" to understand why what they are doing works. Doing something different may point out why it's inefficient to do so however it's a pretty *** backwards way of improving yourself when you are just flying the finger in the face of fact.

Kdenelor is completely right.
If you want to create the builds, you'll have to spend a lot more time on it then you do now.
You'll have to read ElitistJerks fanatically, you'll have to do the math on talents, do the ten thousand shots long tests and you'll have to do so for a lot of talents if you want to be the person to come up with a better build than what the current standard is.
(and I'm betting you'll end up at that cookie cutter build, because those builds have gone through such testing.)

Nothing wrong with being like me. I wait for these fine people to tell me what to do, then I do it to the best of my ability. I'm going to start a club for lazy people like myself...taking applications now.

Wow I really can't believe all the people who get butt hurt over the fact that I enjoy creating my own character the way I want to. I have fun doing what I do on Warcraft, I am able to set goals for myself and more often than not, I am able to reach those goals. If you don't like the way I run my character or I lower the quality of your game play, Don't invite me to your groups or whatnot, there are tons of other hunters out there who can play with their face that will fit your needs.
I don't think I'm the best hunter, but I'm ok with that because I have just as much fun.

I'm not trying to get into a forum war with anyone, I came here with a question, I got the answer (thank you Aethien) and I wish you all to have as much fun as possible on your characters no matter how you play them.

It's ok, I know people spam cookie cutter builds like no tomorrow. Question if all there is is cookie cutter builds, how is it possible to just notice something and re-spec accordingly. I Am probably one of the few MM hunters left on my server since patch. Cookie Cutters don't always give best Talent spec based on current gear. If, at certain points do to gear have an abundance of Stam speccing a survival hunter would make sense. If, you have Intellect and Agi set then MM is for you. If you are in between mix it up untill you can pull the best stats with that gear. useless speccing and wasting gold results in the best outcome. 11/60/0 MM hunter certainly not a cookie cutter.

You don't have to use a cookie cutter build but it would be very stupid not to try it and see if it's best for you.

People made gingerbread man cookies before a cookie cutter existed. They just cut it by hand. It was slow, messy, and inconsistent. Then someone invented the cookie cutter, and voila, well-made gingerbread men were produced in a much more efficient process.

You'd get laughed out if you told a patissier that you'd rather do everything by hand instead of using the tools created to make the process more efficient.

Using a @#%^ed up build doesn't make you a unique and special flower, it just makes you ineffective. What makes you special is the personality you bring to that toon you play, not the spec it has. Be efficient and people will probably enjoy your company more and see you for what actually makes you special, instead of only seeing your spec and lacking DPS and slapping you with a giant mental note that says "uncooperative/inefficient nincompoop".
