Advice for a new warriorFollow

#1 Jan 19 2009 at 11:59 AM Rating: Decent
I am new to this game(taking a break from xbox live) and was searching through the character classes, and found at this point, a warrior most caught my eye. I am one that looks more at the long term, rather than short term, and the Titan's Grip ability really appealed to me.

I was just hoping you could answer me a few questions. I know that warriors can not heal, and unlike other classes, do not have the many tricks to get out of combat. Though, I see that they make the most use from cooking and first aid. In the lower levels, will this be enough to stay alive? Since I am brand new, I do not have colleagues to play with, so I am forced to go much of the early content alone and I was wondering if I will end up dead on more occasions than alive.

My next question is towards professions. I am going to take up mining, because after my research, I found that it makes the most money on the auction house. Keep in mind, I am not solely interested in making money, but just a bit extra would be nice. As for my second, I do wish to take up a crafting profession. Alchemy needs herbalism, and although we lack a healing trait, potions do not interest me that much. So, I am looking at Blacksmithing, or Engineering.

I see that with engineering, you can make guns, and combat pets, as well as mounts, and other quirky things. I was just wondering how useful it is for a warrior. On the other hand, I think I am leaning more towards Blacksmithing. Not only with the money I will save on armor, but for the fact most of the armor looks wonderful. On top of that the weapons and other smithing items, it may be the way to go.

Sorry this post is so long, I am just very inquisitive at the moment. One more thing I wanted to address was spec. I see Titan's Grip is in the middle talent tree, but until I acquire enough points to get it, is there another spec that is good for soloing? I am one who likes a strong defense. In fact at first I was thinking of going Paladin, but I found that I liked the variety of warrior weapons and abilities much more to my liking at this point.

Well, thank you for taking the time to read this. I would appreciate any positive comments and suggestions that you have for me. Please keep in mind I am new at this, but I hope with your help I can at least gain some ground in this massive online world, thank you.

Cooking and first aid really do help speed up the lower levels. First aid is by far one of the most useful professions, for purposes of leveling, for a warrior.

Engineering has some nice late game gear that it can provide for a warrior. Namely the trinkets, helms and guns. Blacksmithing has many key items available, that makes it very lucrative to be a BS end game. The BS plate tanking set and DPS sets are very good. Mind you, most of the stuff that makes up the bulk of BS and Engi are trite and for the most part useless, and stuff you get in game via the quest reward system and the auction house tend to outclass the stuff you could make.

End game, personally; the only thing that makes engi seem nice is the helm. The guns tend to be bind on equip, and with mining, you can farm the materials to put yourself together one of those from an engi. BS has many other items that are Blacksmith only, and your specialized sets at the end make for PvP or Raiding transitions much easier.

Welcome!

First aid is one of the more important secondary professions you can pick up. I do highly recommend getting that and leveling it up. I can't tell you how many times using it after a fight helps. of course, the obvious, don't go into a fight with a little bit of health. But yes, Food and first aid are essentials, in my opinion.

With being dead more often than alive, that all really depends. Some areas are packed tight with mobs, making it hard to pull one separately and results in pulling all of them, which sometimes can cause you to die. Other times it's the opposite.

As for your professions, mining is a good one to pick up. Although if you're wanting to make money, you may want to start out with two gathering instead of picking up a crafting. This is mainly due to the fact that most of your mining materials will go toward the profession instead of making you money. If you're set on taking up blacksmithing or engineering, I quite enjoy engineering myself. If you ever decide to tank with your warrior, you can make some really nice tanking goggles (along with all the other goodies you mentioned).

Regarding Titan's Grip, I cannot really help you there. I've leveled protection since 10, but either Arms or Fury would be faster to level with. Protection helps more with being able to take a beating, although some fights last a bit longer.

The amount of money you save won't even compare to the amount of money you would make.

For a first toon I always and strongly recommend two gathering professions. Money is worth more than any gear sets you could make. This is especially true for a first toon just getting started. Later on when money isn't an issue is when you start looking into crafting. If you take up mining and blacksmith then all your mining materials will go into leveling. You won't really be making any money.

In later levels then money isn't as hard to make and comes more quickly. That's also when crafting items become more useful. Like a lot of players I tried to take up a gathering skill and a crafting skill that complimented each other as well as my choice of class. I made my own armor and I enjoyed it and thought I was doing pretty good. I looked into it more and decided to switch my crafting to a gathering at least until I leveled. I was amazed at how much money I could make. For every odd piece of armor I could craft before that was an upgrade I could buy a cheap similar item, and in some cases the exact same piece, but still have plenty of money for other things that I couldn't craft as well as my mount.

Two gathering professions now and whatever you want later. It's nicer that way.

in response to one part of the question. Warriors don't have alot of tools for getting out of combat. They do have a fear that can scare away mobs allowing you time to run. or hamstring (slow them down) and run. Best to not go into a fight low on health. This is where first aid and cooking come in handy as mentioned above.

I just recently joined WOW (I'm also taking a break from Xbox Live) and I also started a Warrior as well for my first toon. Here are few helpful things that might help you out as a Warrior. I was also worried about getting out of fight if my health got to low so I roled a Night Elf Warrior and I picked to gathering skills to start our my WOW experience. The reason I choose the Night Elf is because he comes with the Shadowmeld ability which allows you to go invisible during a fight if you get close to dieing. 95% of the time the Mob will just run off back to his patrol area and you can just stand there and heal while you are ivisible. However that being said they do start walking towards you and run into you again you will have to fight them again. Also like one of the guys posted, take 2 gathering professions starting out. I would recommend taking Herbalism and Mining, not only because they are both good money makers but Herbalism also offers the Lifebloom spell as a bonus which comes in handy if you are getting close to dieing. I can't tell you how many times that has saved my life in fight. Not to mention once you start getting into the higher end herbs they are very good sellers in the Auction House(and make sure you use the Auction House to sell your Herbs and Ore, never vendor them) I would shy away from picking a manufacturing skill right now because you just don't have the money and means to make anything good just starting out. Also taking to gathering professions has also helped tremendously with my bank account thanks to the Auction House. I have only been playing a little over 3 weeks now and I already have toon up to level 42 and my bank account has 1200 gold sitting in it right now even after I went on a spending spree on my Plate armor once I hit 40.

I recently logged back on after a significant absence and, though the rules have changed considerably, I started back in on my warrior to see how the old guy was doing. I respecced Fury all the way to Titan's Grip and like it (also it looks badass), but it'll take a good while to get there. I generally tanked instances back in the day and have now decided to simply grind/quest through levels and get armor where I might since I'll use him only as an alt now. Fury and TG work well and kill things fairly quickly. After not having played for a while, then starting back as a hunter and switching back to the warrior, healing seems a time sucking chore, and leveling is slower than I seem to care for anymore. I recommend you try out three or so classes up to about 15 or 20 so you get a good feel for the difference, worst case scenario, you wind up with an active alt to fall back on, and a bank. Also, yes on the two gathering profs. The only true warning, is that when you tank you'll get very pissed off quite often, make friends and stick to them for instances, especially healers.

Fury is the best spec for soloing in my opinion. You can take on multiple mobs while leveling as fury. fury> arms in raids and instances hands down. My war is at 2.5k-3k dps in raids as fury. So fury is the real spec for soloing, raiding, doing regular instances and such whereas arms is the best for PvP.
