I'm Very Bad at Mage PVPFollow

#1 Jan 18 2009 at 8:55 PM Rating: Decent
I'm a rogue main (I bet you didn't know that!). And playing mage is totally different. Now, as I'm coming up in levels, I have to deal with bullies. I'm 35 and I just got pummeled by a 32 pally. It's like my brain freezes up and I don't know how to do anything other then run. And even then, it's tough. I just don't know what to do to get them off me long enough to start killing them. I keep mana shield up so I don't die, but that just depletes my mana so I can't do anything. In this particular situation, he kept chasing me and I just kept running, but he caught me, both times. He snared me, stunned me, dotted me and all I could think to do was Frost Nova and blink away. He got close to me once and I Ice Block'd, but he ran in front of me (I was in Descolace trying to get back to Nejis' Point), so when I got free from Ice Block, I just blinked right into him. Thus, I died. Help me! What could I have done to fight back vs a lvl 32 Pally? I'm a disgrace D:!

You should only use Mana Shield in specific situations when you have a Mana Gem up.

At that level your main deal is going to be Polymorph, heal, reinitiate the fight. The real strength of a Mage is the kiting ability but there are almost as many things to negate kiting as there are Fearing. Your best friends are going to be Blink and Iceblock.

In Arena teams and WPVP, where Iceblock is not so commonly used or are refreshed, these tools are beyond lifesafers. They allow you to rework the field to your advantage. Hunter Reds, Pally Bubbles, Rogue Cloaks?? Just IBlock and wait it out. If you set up a Macro correctly you can make it on 1 click it Blocks you, on second click it unblocks you. Use this to break when it seems smart (sometimes immediately after, sometimes as long as you can wait) and then Frost Nova -> Blink away.

Fact is, though, where its relatively easy to get Damage increases in melee stats through STR and AGI, its next to impossible to get anything "good" in the spell power department until TBC. Its simply not balanced. It's something you'll have to deal with until around 60, when Deep Freeze or Arcane Barrage become options. And Ret paladins, Warriors, Rogues, and Hunters ability to catch someone who is fleeing is especially nasty.

TBH you're just going to have to put up with it until then. Later on, tools like Invisible and Mirror Image coupled with high Spell Power will help you versus these baddies... and there will always be classes to give you problems like Prot Warriors and Unholy Deathknights.

The game is not fair at all for leveling casters. My paladin alt is 24 in green armor and lvl 5 armor kits. I can gather up 3 orange con npcs and kill all of them with about half hp and half mana remaining. Problem is orange npcs will resist a caster about 1/3 of the time so you burn your mana up trying to kill them. Meanwhile melee classes can just keep hitting them and taking the damage and they die. My priest is awful to level. I have a 44 priest with full blue armor, twink enchants, twink armor kit on legs, etc. Of course I am speced shadow to level. I still burn my entire mana bar trying to kill orange npcs. Meanwhile my 43 hunter can kill 2 reds at a time. In fact at lvl 32ish I killed a red con HEROIC npc while another orange solo mob was beating on me.

In pvp at your level you have very few spells you can cast that are instant. Meanwhile melee classes are hitting you with there enchanted twink weapons while you spend 3 or 4 seconds trying to cast a spell that might take them down 20% of their health. Honestly even if you did have a twink weapon that could magically take a high level enchant it prob wouldn't do you much good.

It is really ridiculous how overpowered melee classes are leveling compared to casters. Like the 2nd poster said you start seeing more spellpower in TBC and you also can get decent enchants ta lvl 35 if you want to spend the money.

Thanks. I was wondering if there were any addons that help with targeting. Tab targeting doesn't seem to work at a certain range and I was wondering if there was anything that fixed that or anything else that might be recommended.

I roll with the Alt+V HUD Target Bars up. I'm sure there are better options but besides my Pitbull + Proximo, thats the third best tool - its also good for identifying which of your opponents is lower on the HP scale.

Frong's post is right - classes like Hunters are quite frankly overpowered when it comes to leveling. In fact, they're still notably OP in high-end PVE and PVP which is an issue being addressed by Blizzard for the next patch.

But when a Mage hits 80 the game changes - big time. As Frostfire bolt spec, I can knock out 40,000hp before a monster reaches my feet, 60,000hp if I want to Frost Nova. In my current Deep Arcane any monster that is snarable is as good as dead with the use of Slow. And in PVP, a good Arcane or Frost spec will see you ontop of most situations - Arcane is a Offensive Caster/Hunters Nightmare, where Frost excells at negating high melee DPS and controlling the pace of the battle.
