So I am partnering with a friend who is playing a mage and I thought I would try a pally. We just dinged level 8.

Are the only ways for me to pull at lower levels is the Hammer of Justice a stun spell or to run up to mob and start hitting it?

Run up and judge it/hit it... Body pull.

Next patch we'll get a single target taunt that does 1 holy damage allowing us to range pull, but it won't apply to you for a little while levelling. In the 50s you can get a trinket that throws at range, which is otherwise useless. And at 50 you can get Avenger's Shield from the Protection tree, a 30 yard ranged attack that does lots of holy damage to 3 targets and dazes them.

Body pulling should not be a problem with a duo, since each of you should easily be able to handle 2 mobs at that level -- and MANY more when you get a little higher. So you pull a couple extra, who cares?

I don't remember back half that far, but the database says Judgement of Light can be learned at level 4... But if you want to conserve mana, body pulling is traditional, although EZ-throw dynamite (level 10) is an option with a long history.

Let the mage pull,(for long range pulling) but stand in front of them and throw down a Concecrate, that usually will direct the aggro towards you and off the mage....but also be careful of the number of mobs around as the Concecrate will aggro other mobs. Also if giving enough distance, you can jusge the mob as it heads towards the mage. Other then that, Pally's don't really have a range/pull till lots later with Holy Shock or added range to your Judgements. Get used to diving in lol

Well.. if we're going to talk that far in (where they'll be able to make use of Consecration) --

Have the mage full and taunt off them. You can taunt 3 mobs at once.

You are a one man machine. Run in and grab them up. Judge light bless wisdom (when you get it) consecrate and heal as needed. The mage will blow stuff up for you so shouldn't be a problem.

For the first few lvls - you just run at the mob and the mage just spams any of their main nukes. Or have the mage wand.

When you and the mage get more abilities you can AOE tank them down. The mage will pick up IMP Blizz and you can pick up tanking talents in the 30s that will allow you to tank 6+ mobs at a time and live. You only get better at this as you go.

From lvl 1 - 20 you will basically run at the mob - the mage will nuke. Your goal is fast kills and quick quests. There is no real group tactics at that lvl.

Just going to chime in with 2 cents worth here. Paladin & Mage combination works well, and questing together will be fun, provided you both learn a bit about the tools you have (and may I suggest if you haven't already, please download the mod Omen 3 and use it?)

I've played a Paladin/Mage combination from 30's through to 80 with my partner, Prot spec Paladin and fire spec mage = pretty good questing pair, and quite OP in most situations.

The only better (more capable) combination I've played is Priest & Warrior (Holy Priest, Fury Warrior). That pair regularly took on rare elites including adds 5-6 levels over their level, and came out on top.

In the upcoming 3.0.8 patch, paladins learn a 30 yard range taunt/pull spell at level 16.

Hand of Reckoning.

At level 8, there isn't much you can do. You don't get consecrate until level 20, and you don't get a true ranged pull until much later (well, you will get one at level 16 when the next patch comes out, but it hasn't yet).

Your judgement has a 10-yard range, so if you don't want the mage to pull, use seal of righteousness, and get close enough to the mob (10 yards) to judge light (I don't think you have judgement of wisdom at level 8). This may still pull more than one mob, but it won't pull as many as body-pulling.

You really don't get much to work with as a Paladin until level 20, but even from level 1-20 your surviveabity (especially partnering with a mage) is great, and you can do decent damage, so unless you do something horribly wrong you shouldn't die.

I recommend that you take the time to read all of the stickies at the top of the Paladin forums page here... It will tell you a lot about Paladins in general and about the three specific talent trees for Paladin and might give you an idea of which spec to go with. The majority of Paladins go with Retribution talents for leveling and then a certain percentage go Holy or Protection later once they hit at least level 60 or so. This is not required, especially if you know you are always going to be teaming up with a mage. If holy or prot interest you even early on, you can try them since the mage is going to be dealing a ton of damage anyway.

I leveled my main with a Shadow Priest as my partner. Talk about awesome! We couldn't be killed and never ran out of mana either. Shouldn't be too much different with you and a mage, although if you over-extend yourselves you may need to drink to get your mana back on occasion. You are still gonna have to try pretty hard to die once you are familiar with your characters and know your limitations.
