Hunter returning to wow - need spec adviseFollow

#1 Jan 13 2009 at 9:04 AM Rating: Good
Hi all!

I have a lvl 60 hunter, haven't played since TBC came out. Didn't lvl at all back then, just played the one month that came with the expansion. Not sure yet if I will get the latest expansion, will see how it goes as I level the hunter to 70.

Of course, returning to the game I have all my specs wiped fresh, my bars are all messed up, a lot has changed and I do not remember my exact old spec. I can't even find all my pets in my mess of bags and bank! I am a Miner, skinner, and just sold the mats for gold.

I am looking for advise on a new template, a spec that will solo good for farming gold, and grind levels.

My main is a 60 mage, but my hunter was my first character and was still my gold farming toon. I find now that I have logged in again, I am very short of gold.

I've been trying to check out other's specs, but the trees seem so complex now, I've been away for so long. It's hard to decide on the points split, when I can no longer understand a lot of the abilities and spells.

What is the maximum spec points now, for lvl 60, 70 or 80? I should have 51 to start at 60, right? How many more will I get by 70?

What else has changed in the last year or two that I may not know?

Man, I have a lot of reading to do till I get up to speed again!

Any help much appreciated in advance!

You always get 9 less talent points then your level. So at 80, that's 71 points. you get one point per level.

For your case, where you aren't yet at 80, or even 70, my general recommendation is to focus on one tree and try and pick the best talents that you can as you progress. BM is probably the easiest.

this is something along the lines of what I had around level 60, at least as close as I can get since they went and changed things in the trees since then.

Now, this is by no means the optimal DPS spec for instances, but this should do you well enough for the solo farm/grind on your way to 70 and beyond should you get WotLK. The next few points I would probably throw either into Careful Aim in the MM tree, or Kindred Spirits in the BM tree.

It really isn't THAT vital how you spec especially while solo leveling, sure some can be more/less efficient but you can still level just fine with any spec. It becomes a much larger issue when you start raiding and even regular instances.

Thanks for the tips!

I just finished speccing my mage, and I found that looking at template databases was useless. Too much has changed in the last patches. I ended up following a guide on the mage talents, and build from scratch. It turned out to be easier than I thought.

So I will do the same with my hunter, but first need to recall what I was into before. My memory completely fails me, but I was quite happy with him. I am sure I have some notes on his build, and will look for them next.

Once that is in place, it is just a matter or studying the available talents, and playing with the character builder.

I am finding Hellfire a bit of a grind so far. There are not many people there, and no groups. It's going to be a tough solo to 70, but once there things should improve as there are more players in the 70-80 range.

Having said all that! What are the best pets to have these days for a horde hunter?

These forums pretty much answer your questions, you just need to do a little "legwork" for the pet tho read this:

They are hands down the best leveling pet.

you can easily skip any/all group quests and level to 70 and head into the new content. (actually only need to be 68 right?)

Yes to the 68.

OP, welcome back to WoW. How I wonder what it was like to play when you last (as I'm not even a year old in WoW yet).

As for a Spec. . . you will probably want to go BM. That way your pet does the tanking and you do the DPSing.

Pet to use? Get a gorilla. A Gorilla and a group of mobs + a Mend Pet here and there + Volley is good fun. Well it is good fun atm. Or a cat (or any other DPS pet).

You said you might not get the x-pack, unless you level really slowly..TBC shouldn't take you long to get through (took me less then a month).
I just had this convo in my guild before i logged (as someone wanted help lvling): Do Hell Fire to 62, then go up to Zanagamarsh (I know these zones mean nothing to you know, but they will..) til 64, hit up Tek. Forest til 64, Jump over to Nagard til 66, bust it up in Blade's Edge until 68. . . and if you don't buy the x-pack, goto the Netherstorm and hit 70 (but if you do get the x-pack, you can go to Northland at 68, and have a much easier [imo] and funnier time leveling).

What else has changed? Your pets not have a Talent Tree, when you ahve a pet summoned hit 'N' and you will see the Pet Tab on the right. Pets now come in 3 types, and that effects their tree (a DPS, a Tank, and some other one? [i just use Tank and DPS pets]).

The bad news, is the next update is said to nerf us. . . so just be ready if what ever spec you do, doesn't work as well after the update.
