Mage returning to wow - need spec adviseFollow

#1 Jan 13 2009 at 9:00 AM Rating: Decent
Hi all!

I have a lvl 60 mage, haven't played since TBC came out. Didn't lvl at all back then, just played the one month that came with the expansion. Not sure yet if I will get the latest expansion, will see how it goes as I level the mage to 70.

Of course, returning to the game I have all my specs wiped fresh, my bars are all messed up, a lot has changed and I do not remember my exact old spec (although it was mostly fire). I am a herbalist alchemist.

I am looking for advise on a new template, a spec that will solo good for farming gold, grind levels, and join dungeon groups.

I played as frost till some point then changed to fire. I like AOE groups, but also like high damage fire soloing. I don't know if I should keep a fire spec and change it later, or change to frost now and maybe try fire later. I've been trying to check out other's specs, but the trees seem so complex now, I've been away for so long. It's hard to decide on the points split, when I can no longer understand a lot of the abilities and spells.

What is the maximum spec points now, for lvl 60, 70 or 80? I should have 51 to start at 60, right? How many more will I get by 70?

What else has changed in the last year or two that I may not know?

Man, I have a lot of reading to do till I get up to speed again!

Any help much appreciated in advance!

Spec everything into frost.

You are at a huge disadvantage - The only people in TBC content are ALTs and DK that are trying to race through it.

You will replace nearly 100% of you gear (even Epix) in the first few lvls with OL greens.

Also - Leveling speed has been increased from 60-70. So what used to take X exp to achiece now takes something less.

Get WotLK when you get to 68.

Thanks for the info! Looking at various temnplates, I am thinking frost. I like fire for damage, but can try that later. Frost will help level and be better in groups etc.

I concur with Outland being empty. Been soloing without speccing no problem except spells take longer to cast and some kill tasks are too hard. With no way to get into a group, will have to just grind it.

Good call on WotLC at 68, will probably do.

Change of heart...

Going with a fire spec for now, few reasons. I used to be fire, and am more familiar with it and it's rotations (despite the changes to the game). My hot bars are mostly already set up for it, thank you Blizz for recording my basic setups from years ago and returning them to me when I reactivated. It didn't take too long to build a template in fire because a lot of stuff is coming back from memories of past. I liked fire in the past due to the supreme damage, and this does not appear to have changed.

I'll work on a frost build over time, and respec it later when I need or get bored of fire. While looking through the talents, Frost looks to be very powerful indeed. I would be remiss if I were not to try it for a week or two. It's just too steep a learning curve right now because a lot of the game is new to me already. It'll take much longer to build a template in Frost because I am unfamiliar with the a lot of the talents.

Looking at others templates is usless at this point because they are out of date. I found this out when after studying a few and then going to Wow's character builder only to find most of the talents are missing, changed, renamed, or new.

So I reread the "Best Mage Post Ever", and proceeded from scratch on the character builder. It turned out to be pretty easy that way, because the decision to include or not include a certain talent was simple after checking it in that post. In the end, I had a 10-61-0 spec. This could be modified slightly by adding into frost or more arcane, but for now I am plowing through to near full fire.

I had AC before, and am used to it, and must have it now, so that is why I have 10 in Arcane.

Here is the spec for consideration, comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated!
