Druids and the riding skillFollow

#1 Jan 13 2009 at 1:34 AM Rating: Decent
I'm about to hit Lv30 and obviously I'll be able to gain the riding skill and the Travel form. But, is the riding skill really worth it for a druid? The travel form is much cheaper, but is the movement speed significantly worse than that of a mount? What I'm really asking is: would I be wasting cash by gaining the riding skill over travel form?

Cheers.

How much better than travel form is it? Realistically?

The first riding skill isn't that big of an upgrade, but later on you will need to get it anyway for the epic land mount. Basic riding makes a difference when travelling long distances, over short distances travel form is much better since it's instant cst.

That's great, thanks.

Although its quite a few levels away you also need riding skill to get flight form. So as already mentioned get ridding skill.

I got my first mount on my druid at 60. given my druid was my alt at the time so I would only play it for an hour or so I was just too lazy to go to darnassus to train. IMO outlands is when you'll need/want a mount.

I suppose it depends on whether you feel 35g (or less) is worth the upgrade of going from +40% speed to +60% speed... which is, what, a 15% increase?

IMO, if you're using cheetah-form to "decrease travel time" then yeah, you'll want a mount asap, if you can afford it. If for no other reason than to escape random mobs that attack you as you're trying to get back to town or escape a pkiller or something.

Shame. I remember when cheetah form was amazing at level 30, back when getting a mount was at level 40.

Get riding skill like everyone has said, you're going to need it when you want to get swift flight form.

Get on the freeway and drive 50 mph. Feels brutally slow, yeah? Now go 80. Ah, that's better. Now slow down to 70. Sucks, huh? That's the mathematical equivalent of coming down from mounted speed to travel form.

But IMHO the #1 reason for druids to mount up: Running through/past mobs. In travel form you get hit from behind just once you're gonna get dazed and have to waste time fighting. When riding mount you might occasionally get dismounted by those same hits, but most of the time you can take some hits and just keep on truckin'.

At 30 you still have a lot of LONG runs ahead of you. Mount up, man!

I thought the same thing, I used travel form until about level 39 then one day I was following someone about the same level who had their mount and they outran me slowly. Before that I thought the speed was about the same. It was enough of a difference to make me go right out and get the skill and the mount. Try it yourself, follow someone on a mount, you'll go get this right away.

Its funny you mentioned that because I remember trying to decide if I should get the epic land mount or not. One day I was riding beside someone who had it and before I knew it they left me in the dust. Lol

The main reason to get it is that you will have to get it eventually so you may as well get the benefit of it as much as possible in the meantime. There are some long runs while leveling, and you do end up saving a significant amount of time by using your mount on the long runs compared to travel form.
