help with overall build and equipFollow

#1 Jan 11 2009 at 8:36 PM Rating: Decent
Well, I'm a level 80 Frost mage. I went to my first instance of Naxx 10 man and our group wiped 3 times in a row. The pug group determined that I was not dps'ing enough and asked me to drop group and they were going to persue trying it with someone else. It was the first instance I've ever been in where no totems were placed what so ever, and as far as I am concerned the only problem I had was mana conservation (and I have always been on instances wehre totems were always placed almost every boss fight). We were fighting Patchwerk and I was frostbolting like crazy, using mana gems, as well as mana potion enjectors. The problem was to keep any mana at all, I ended up having to pop the gem or potion asap and resort to using a wand till my mana came back up to a useable amount.

I wont sit and call the decision BS or anything even though I didnt know even one person, and I am a relatively noob as far as instances go (particularly wotlk) so I dont know how good or bad my efforts ultimately were though I was typically seeing crits in the high 4k and low 5k range and felt I was definately holding my own.

What I would like is a bit of advice on my 'build' and what I can do to better it (skill and armor). Up till lately, I have been a PvE person, and every-once-in-awhile going on instance runs. My guild is not a big guild by any sense of the imagination, so getting the ultimate gear isnt all that likely unless I happen to get a totally lucky roll on a pug group I happen to get into or I make it on my own (I'm a 440 tailor right now). I am now looking to do much more instance running (as far as pve goes, I have finished all the quests entirely in Wotlk so except for dailies I'm done getting gear that way as well). I also am trying to start going on some raids, though PVP has never really interested me and prolly never will except for getting the [For the Horde] achievement.

I will be making a spellweave robe for myself as soon as I get the final few pieces of spellweave made. Other than that and getting the haste enchant on my back piece I'm not sure what else I should be doing.

Honest critique and suggestions would be appreciated.

With low spell damage and low crit, your only abundant stat is haste. Sure you are casting faster, which is why you run so low on mana and have to struggle with maintaining it. What is the average damage of your frostbolts on Patchwerk?

Patchwerk is essentially a dps/gear test. He has a 6 minute enrage timer which means you have to kill him as fast as you can.

I'd get more gear made, run heroics to better gear yourself. I think the only item you have that is great is the cloak. Maybe look at specs also. I am not saying you should go to another tree, but see what talents will improve your dps overall if you choose to remain frost. www.maxdps.com is a great site and I found it was able to narrow my gear selections to what would improve my dps by a greater margin.

Your spell damage is incredibly low. I had more spell power in T4/T5 gear in TBC. You are short between 9 or 12% hit rating (if you have a boomkin/spriest you need 290 (with elemental precision) to be capped. If not you need around 365 or so.

Frost is pretty bad for instances because of the super low crit rating (11.5% glyphed (if you have the molten armor glyph and are actually using it). The second trinket is terrible overall and even worst for frost because it goes by spell crits which you will get 1 every 15-20 casts.

Run some 5mans/heroics go to wow-loot.com and see what upgrades you need to make for yourself. Consider respeccing to frostfire once you get your damage and crit up a bit (thread should be on the first page, started by myself). Overall you were hurting your group more than you could have possibly been helping them. I would guess on a fight where many people push 3k-4k dps you were probably doing around 1200-1500 which is abysmal for a dps race.

Another silly thing that you probably already do: Your water elemental is your mana battery and a big source of your dps. You should be using him a minimum of 2 times each battle, once on regular cooldown and using coldsnap to let you cast it a second time. On fights like patch you should dps down a little mana, cast your elemental, cast immediatly at 3 minute cooldown and then use coldsnap and use it again when you are a little low on mana or at least the 5 minute mark of the battle.

Just my 2c.

There is a thread on elitistjerks.com about frost raiding which basically says that it's inferior to FFB.

I was very popular doing badge runs and even raids with my frost before Wrath, but FFB just clearly tops frost now in raids. I would like to spec to frost now and then, because I don't agree with those who say frost isn't good for 5mans. I could seriously rock heroics with my pally tank friend if I were frost spec'd. Can't wait till dual spec.

Anyway, like Anobix said, get some hit in your gear.

I guess you should get ready to pay heavy respec fees/glyph fees if you want to top dps charts in 5mans, while doing the same in raids. I choose to do lower (but powerful) dps in 5mans, and do my best in raids w/ FFB spec. Mine's a little off-kilter, I guess, but it does the job.

While I haven't been removed from raids/guilds for my low frost dps, I have been threatened with the demotion to socialite (at which point I politely took my leave) for not learning my FFB spec fast enough and how I played it (their loss lol).

So I can see why you were booted from Naxx because of your Patchwerk performance, because it's a gear/performance check. If he's not dead within a certain time, it's a wipe. Dps has to be at least (what was it you said, Pold?) 1800 or so. Better is better.

Bottom line is that raiding has a cost other than flasks: you have to read up on your class/spec, or you don't get a spot.

Well, since I posted this initially, I have upgraded and changed out to other gear. My initial dps was around 1045 and now has picked up some to where I am now 1251.

What are the glyphs that are most advantagous to use for a frost mage? I was so off on my gear/build by so much that I can only assume my glyphs are also completely wrong. At this moment I have:

Majors:
Glyph of Ice Lance
Glyph of Polymorph
Glyph of Frostbolt

Minors:
Glyph of Slow Fall
Glyph of Frost Armor
Glyph of Penguin

I am at this point considering switching over the the 0/53/18 build that most seem to have as well, but would be the first to admit that I've been frost so long I have no idea what the spell rotation would even be as a heavy fire mage build.

Thanks for the help thus far. I appreciate the candor.

If you have any questions about a frostfire build go to the thread that I made and read it, it answers pretty much all you need to know about it.
