I hit 80… Now what?Follow

I just dinged 79 actually but am looking toward 80 and trying to lay out some sort of plan. I have heard conflicting reports about whether I need to gear up from the regular or heroic dungeons first. What my DPS needs to be, and what hit rating needs to be before I start running raids.

Obviously I am not there yet but I thought I would ask you guys for advice. Specifically:

1. What should I run first: regular or heroic dungeons, based on my status now (link to armory page below)
2. What does my DPS need to be before I am ready for Heroics/Raids? Also, how do I check what my DPS is?
3. What does my Hit Rating need to be before I can run Heroics/Raids?

Any help is appreciated. I have looked at the pre-raid gear list and that is my goal, I am just not sure if I am ready for Heroics or if there is gear that I need to just to be Heroics ready.

ALSO, as I am sure it makes a difference, I would be running most regulars, heroics, raids with my guild that has recently "merged" somewhat with another to run raids exclusively.

Thanks for the help.

Always always always get as much gear from regular instances before you even consider jumping into any heroics because if you don't you'll just add to the hunter's bad name. As far are gear and hit cap goes, if it's still the same, you'll need to be hit capped before you raid at least and preferably before you get to far into the heroics run. As far as gear goes, as always there is lovely sticky that tells you what some of the options are as well as where they come from. Also don't forget that once you hit 80 there's always the lovely and thankfully bliz listened to our whines, the somewhat easier rep grind. Grats on almost getting to the end of your leveling career.

1: Heroics are the new normal instances.
2: If you can pull 1500+ dps on a target dummy, you're ready for em.
If you can't fix your spec/glyphs/rotation. :P
(download Recount or use WoWwebstats to check your dps)
3: for stats to aim for pre-raids check the sticky.

edit: one thing you really want to do right now is quest in sholazar for the nesingwary questline and a new bow.

That actually brings up another question I have.

I got Recount as requested by fellow guild mates and I haven't the slightest clue how to tell what my DPS is. I am sorry if that sounds stupid but I really can't. I found one part of it that tells me what different shots are doing but not an all around DPS.

How do I figure that out?

Thanks for the replies. I made a list of the gear that I need to get to be raid ready and will start working on it as soon as I hit 80.

Also, are there any sort of requirements to run heroics? Like the atunements with certain groups that you had to be friendly with to get the key in TBC?

To see your stats in recount, type "/recount show" and keep scrolling through the different tables until you find the one that shows damage output. This will show your total damage output with your DPS and % damage in parentheses.

There are no prerequisites for heroics in WotLK. I'd recommend starting with heroic UK as it is an easy instance and there is a nice epic crossbow that drops from the last boss in there. It is one of the better pre-raid pieces of gear you can get pretty easily.

I strongly recommend Aethien's pre-raid gear post as well as Rinkkel's reply in this thread. Both have helped me tremendously.

Oh yeah, before I forget, be sure to get your tabards for the Argent Crusade and the Knights of the Ebon Blade, in particular. Be sure to wear one of your factional tabards whenever you are running lvl 80 normal or heroic instances. When you hit revered with the Knights of the Ebon Blade you can pick up this enchant and when you hit exalted with the Argent Crusade you can get this chest, both of which are excellent for newly minted lvl 80 hunters.

Thanks for the advice. I am currently making a list of the best gear for me (a BM Hunter) from Aethien's pre-raid gear post.

As for Tabards… where do I get them? Are there any pre-req for them (i.e. must be friendly with faction first)?

There are currently 4 tabards you can wear in instances to gain reputation: Argent Crusade, Knights of the Ebon Blade, Kirin Tor, and Wyrmrest Accord.

These are available when you reach a friendly reputation from the factional quartermaster. Usually the starting quests that introduce you to a faction will get you to a friendly reputation, so you should have no problem picking up the tabards.

No offense, but that's really stupid advise.
It takes little time to level a ranged skill to (near) max.
And as a good hunter, you should have all 3 (close to) capped anyway.
