After my last disappointing debacle using old numbers and thinking I was block capped, I've upgraded some gear (go-go 2pc T7 XD) and am fairly certain that I'm now block capped while unbuffed.

According to my paper doll, I'm at 24.53% dodge, 18.55% parry, and 18.55% block. 6.16% chance to be missed from a defense rating of 554 + 5% base chance to be missed = total tooltip avoidance of 72.79. Throw on Holy Shield and I'm at 102.79% combined avoidance. Wee!

So now it seems like the joy of comparing upgrades relative to effective health has begun. I just picked up the Bracers of Dalaran Parapets tonight, but I'm holding off on enchanting them until I see whether or not the patch comes out this upcoming week. If it does, whatever enchant I put on them now will be wasted when I upgrade to the new stamina enchant :P If not, I'll work out what to add later.

Is that the right approach? Using effective health as my guide or just maintaining 102.4% and ramming whatever I have left over for gems/enchants/etc. into stamina?

The only thing in there that you can't be 100% sure about if Miss from Defense. The avoidences that are listed in the Defense area of the paperdoll all account for Diminishing Returns, but the avoidences that you get from the mouse-over tooltips don't. Which means it'll actually be EXTREMELY SLIGHTLY less than 6.16%. It probably isn't enough to drop you below cap.

Now you get to stack Dodge and Defense at the expense of Block Rating to improve pure avoidence, Block Value to improve Effective Health (since every hit you take will be a block, it's a huge benefit now), and Stamina. At least from a survivability standpoint. You might consider stacking threat/dps stats if you have no trouble surviving.

I have a crapload of extra Attack Power and other threat stats on some of the gear I use. Of course, I have a pure survival set built up incase it's needed for Ulduar as well. Pure survival just isn't advantageous with the content that's out right now :(

This is something where TankPoints really comes in handy with the calculator. Just quickly messing around last night I learned that I can afford to drop 36 defense and still remain block capped (not accounting for diminishing returns). Not that dropping my defense would necessarily be my first choice, but it's good to know that when the patch comes out, I can put the +block value augment on my shield in place of the +20 defense enchant currently there. It also let's me fiddle with gems/enchants to determine how dropping one stat from a particular gem slot and replacing it with another would affect things. It's definitely going to slow down loot council decisions when it comes time for potential upgrades from raids at this point, but it's still kinda fun ;D

The trick is to have already done all the possible calculations for any gear that MAY drop on a run well in advance :D Yes... somewhat sad, but you go in knowing exactly what you want :D
