Melee Hunter/TankFollow

BEFORE YOU FLAME ME PLEASE READ
I am not a huntard (At least I don't think I am.) I am a ranged DPS bm hunter. However I am a tanking addict. So I thought of a theoretical hunter tanking build. I AM NOT SPEC'ING THIS WAY THIS IS JUST IN THEORY!!

Hunter Tank

Last Laugh
Namlak's Supernumerary Sticker
These would be the items to be wielded assuming since a hunter has no block value and they can't get the nice defense rating plate they'd have to rely on Resilience, Dodge+, and Parry+.

Deflection Ring
Sand Worn Ring
Chained Military Necklace
This is all gear stacked supoorting the original idea Then All arena gear (for resilience) and whatever they don't offer have it stacked with stamina.

Then for enchants,
+10 all stats for chest.
+2% threat generation and 5 parry rating (arsman for) for gloves
+max amount of armor for cape (i think 170)
+18 resil and 20 stam for head (idk if there is a better vendor resil glyph)
+15 hit rating +15 crit rating (Icewalker)
+25 hit +25 crit for 1 weapon
+Crusader or Lifestealing on the other
+30 ap +20 hit rating for shoulders (some sons of hodir glpyh)
+2% threat on bracers
+55 stam and 20 agil on legs

Most of that makes sense except for the crusader or life stealing. my reasoning with that is even though it has reduced effects the little heals it procs will help you generate threat

Pet: Gorilla

Glyphs:
Major: Glyph of Freezing Trap
Major: Glyph of Deterance
Major: Glyph of Aspect of the monkey.
Minor: Revive Pet
Minor: Mend Pet
minor: Possessed Strength

Mechanics:
Obviously the Hunter would tank next to his pet. And the hunter will not b the best tank so will require additional healing. Hopefully the hunter would b able to tank and switch aggro over with Gorilla while the healer heals the hunter up. The hunter disengages and does distracting shot. Anytime the hunter loses aggro he can use distracting shot. Using Aspect of the Dragon Hawk the whole time. The Hunter would also use eyes of the beast for the pull.

Stats:
420 Resilience
15 defense rating minimum (to stop crushing blows on heroic raids) If it's achievable 140. (additional)
18~20% chance to dodge without dragon hawk
15%~17% Chance to parry
20k unbuffed Hp

Let me explain a fight:
Hunter puts gorilla on passive and lays explosive trap. Hunter uses eyes of the beast and takes gorilla and thunderstomps mobs for extra damage and aggro. hunter cancels eyes of the beast and multi shots the incoming mobs and stings as many of them as possible. The mobs get to the hunter and trigger the trap The hunter begins to melee and turns off the gorilla thunderstomp. The hunter continues to melee and lay explosive traps. Everytime the hunter reaches 100% threat he reactivates thunderstomp until he is about to lose threat. If the hunter starts taking too much damage the gorilla will use growl and intimidate to take aggro off 1 mob then the hunter moves the rest away and activates thunderstomp.

Seems like this could make a viable off-tank? Comments?

None at all. You aren't meant to be a tank.

Oh Yuppley, suck it up.

In BC there was a hunter who geared avoidance and tanked Karazan. I suggest you google it.

Do you know what offtanking means?

It means you're holding threat vs exactly one person: your healer. Which isn't hard. Offtanks hold mobs so they don't go eating someone they aren't supposed to while the MT and the rest of your group deals with a higher priority target. Trapping/kiting, or maybe, MAYBE having your pet growl something off another player, is how you offtank.

You are not going to be tanking for 3 fully charged DPSers AND a healer. Your abilities don't carry enough innate threat bonuses for it.

(And yes, I'm talking IN THEORY. Theoretics don't ignore facts, they simply look at ideas before they are attempted as principles.)

Anyone can tank anything when overgeared and/or overleveled for its content. Try again.

Xsarus, Sir, I remember that vividly, but I'm standing by my point. It was far less efficient than using a Warrior or Paladin.

Here, I even posted.

I can see the point in the thread is to make us think about all the changes that have been made recently but although it is an interesting thought for any Hunter to be able to Melee i cannot see it working as we are better at being at distance from the mobs even as a SV hunter and the talents you have chosen are missing out on what i think are better talents anyway so would be doing far less damage than putting more into just one main tree .

I believe it may work for a fun run but would depend on being over level or overgeared for the place you try it in , but saying that my pure BM level 71 hunter with a gorilla as my tank can solo some of the low end outland instances with a little care being taken , but not with me doing any real Melee stuff , and i would not want to even try and offtank a Boss , send my pet perhaps but i know from past exp Bosses tend to do more damage than can be healed on me.

I think if you could get enough health it may work as an off tank but why not roll a DK as you would have more fun and they get a pet anyway so makes more sense , and of course they are meant to be off tanks or even main tanks if the spec is right so would be far better.

A hunter tank less efficient then a warrior or paladin? No shit! I also heard that bandaging people is less effective then having a healer in a group.

Yes, and? Seeing as that is exactly the case I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. I expect better from you mental.

I think you would do a much better job at "Off Tanking" by kiting than if you were going to try to go toe-to-toe with a mob. To me that would be a better use of a Hunter's skills than trying to be an OT. As a plus side, you can remain a Ranged DPSer for your raid. Just keep your pet on what ever the tank is currently fighting until they can get to the mob you're kiting.
