Currently I am a level 10, almost 11, enhancement shaman. I read that until 40 its better to use a 2h weapon instead of 1h and shield. Why is that? I always thought it was better to use a shield because of our lack of armor.

Just my impression but... The damage reduction you get from the shield reduces the amount of damage that you are taking per hit, but the drop in your damage output makes the fight take longer, hence you take more strikes. Net, you're not taking substantially less damage per encounter, it just takes you longer to finish the fight.

In general, leveling faster simply means raising your damage output to the most you can reasonably consistently maintain.
