Looking for Dr. BoomFollow

#1 Jan 02 2009 at 5:02 PM Rating: Good
Or more precisely, a mob that will nicely sit still and be subjected to horrible things from afar. But at a high enough level that it's practical to level ranged weapons on the creature. Hell, for that matter I'd also love to know of a mob that doesn't do much melee damage but can sustain enough hits to the face that leveling melee weapons on it also works.

Anyone found the Dr. Boom and Ghostly thingamajig of Northrend yet?

I haven't heard of any, but then I haven't been playing much lately so maybe someone else knows.

You could try running regular instances with low-levels and cheap ammo--they'll be grateful, you won't spend too much and you'll still be doing tons of damage, and you can level a new pet at the same time.

edit--would the Servants in the Blasted Lands still work for melee if you are picking up a weapon skill for the first time? I know they don't work for me, they die, but I did complete that quest chain so I don't know whether they have been fixed or if I am just special. (I'm still using the bag from that, too. <.< Time to look into frostweave, methinks.)

can you just use the target dummies? I haven't tried it yet, but I assumed you could level your weapons on those.

No, Servants are fixed. And this is actually on my Rogue. I've stopped playing my Hunter for a while. I got tired of the retardification of the class.

Ah, okay. That gives me a better idea of what you need at least, even if I can't really think of anything off the top of my head.

I know what you mean about the class, but I can't bring myself to switch to my warrior quite yet, I love playing hunter too much. I even tried switching to resto sham again and I just keep coming back. I think I must enjoy pain and sadness and being lumped in with 'tards.

@zebug--nope, can't get levels from those. :(

It's a good idea, though. Zebug. They used to give skill levels during beta.

wait, Dr Boom doesn't give skillups anymore?
#8 Jan 02 2009 at 9:33 PM Rating: Good
He does, and then the level difference sets in. Getting past 370 on him is a chore. Hunters can autoshoot their way through a quiver while going afk, their pet dealing with the odd stray mob. But a Rogue can't. I spent 196 throws getting from 369 to 370, and I've only got 200 throws before I have to go and repair the Thrown weapon.

So he's basically out of the question. Even for Hunters that would be a very lengthy process. Still, Hunters can level their ranged by farming something ad nauseum and switching weapons for skillups. As a Rogue, I don't have a tank to keep anything and length to keep throwing at it. So, in the end, leveling Thrown, Crossbows, Bows and Guns for Rogues is quite a bit of a *****. I have to get an instance group to agree to me just sapping the pull, then standing back and throwing until the bossfight starts or something like that, I guess. Guns, Crossbows and Bows aren't too important. But Deadly Throw requires thrown skill, and that means I need to get that skill up to max pronto.

Ah well, I just thought I'd ask here, since Dr. Boom was a staple amongst the Hunter community for such a long time. Perhaps someone here would have noticed a similar mob in Northrend.

His level isn't that high but..
In Dragonblight, there's a cave North of Agmar´s Hammer (I think =/)
At the end of this cave there´s a guy...
He's Immune to Damage and does nothing, unless you use the item provided to you by a quest.

He still gives skill-ups while immune

I don't remember much (as you might have noticed :P) but if you look up the achievement "master of arms" in WoWhead. You'll find more details.

Awesomeness, I'll be testing him out later. Thanks for the tip.

I was pretty sure that the target dummies were valid for skill-ups.

Ooh, glad someone found one. :)

I'll have to check him out myself, my gun skill is waaay too low right now (just switched from xbow).

Found him, the mob is Rothin the Decaying in DragonBlight.
Level 75, doesn't move, attack, die and cannot be tagged.

Just be careful of people trying to kill him for a quest.

That's the guy I'll be spending alot of time with. Sounds perfect, really, since he can be used for both melee and ranged.
This is going to be fixed at some point in the future, I'm sure.

I skilled up my 2H sword fro Knight of Ebon Blade Rep. by entering into VH and fighting those mobs that run at the elite guards. I went through a stack of bandages and a few FD's but it went quickly.

I found a way to skill up melee weapons without getting hit. Have your pet aggro the mob, then put it on passive. You won't do enough damage (at least for a while) to pull aggro (your pet of course just sits there and takes it), and you can heal pet as needed.

It seems this would work for a rogue or anyone else, just team up with a hunter who is willing to let their pet be a punching bag for you.

This mob (level 80 elite) in Stormpeaks is chained up and can't run at you from memory. The only downside is that once he gets to low health he turns green to you (although going out of combat may just reset him). Shouldn't be too much of an issue for a rogue throwing though as the DPS isn't too crazy :)

Might be ok for a hunter to use as well for leveling. Not going to help much for the melee stuff though.

I checked last night and even though he is chained up, he still just runs to you anyway until you get far enough away and he resets. Looks like the guy in the cave in Dragonblight is the way to go. Would have been nice to have a level 80 mob to work on.

If that mob in Dragonblight gets fixed, I'll double the suggestion of going into normal Violet Hold. The mobs die fairly quickly, but they keep on coming. I got "knuckle sandwich" and "Master of Arms" fairly quickly in there. Just make sure to bring plenty of bandages.
