540 Def - Now what?Follow

No - this isn't a post about stacking STA or pure avoidance. I know - get my STA to 25k now that I've hit 540 Def.

Here is the topic: What now? I know I can run Heroics, but which ones should I be focused on? I hit 540 the other day and haven't done anything since. I know it sounds dumb, but where should I go first? What heroic instances should be my priority?

I ran H. VH as a quasi-DPS/Tank before 540, but that's it. I really want to do it for the Legs that drop and the possible +Block Trinket from the random boss.

I'm still LFG for Reg. HoL for the Tanking drop from the last boss, but other than that - I'm not sure...

Any advice?

Some of these may interest you (or not) -- I'm going to leave it to you to figure out what each piece is :D:

VH for the pants & trinket
Old Kingdom for the bracers
Azjol for the trinket
Stratholme for the shield
Pinnacle for the sword
Gundrak for the ring

etc etc..

Of course badges are always useful too. Check out some loot tables and see what you'd like, then make sure you make an effort to go there. Heroics are nice in that they're harder to obsess over items than back in pre-heroic vanilla (or even regular Steam Vault for that damned Devilshark! Over 60 runs with no drop :() -- if you can only run it once a day, you get in the habit of shrugging off not getting the drop and moving on to the next :D

I'm kind of at the same spot myself. I'm the leader of a guild filled with RL friends and people with whom I've played for years over different games so I'm not interested in joining a raiding guild. My advice, for what it's worth, is to not sweat too much over gear; if you have 540 defense and 25khp then you're good-to-go for any heroic and 10-man content. Enjoy the game, help some lowbies or guildies and such or level an alt.

That said, I've put my share of time into running heroics in the last few weeks since hitting 80 and have a number of nice Heroic dungeon drops.
Armory: http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Terokkar&n=Toothdecay
I've upgraded my hp a good bit and lost some avoidance but with the Kirin Tor rep hands and T7 body in 15 badges, I should begin to balance out once more.

I usually pick a heroic instance that I want to do, put myself in LFG and listen for any group that needs a tank for a heroic. Grab Atlas loot if you don't have it and you can check the loot tables for stuff you want as the solicitations fly.

I was going to type out suggestions but Losie hit the nail on the head.

Well - I'm actually at the point where I have 540 Def, but 20k Health.

I'm trying to now figure out what Heroics I need to get into to Get the health up.

I haven't enchanted everything, but I know that a lot of gear in TBC was sort-of "required" to progress. I was wondering if the same was true with Wrath. Any "must have" gear.

My worry is that getting a new piece will drop my Def-Cap.

Oh, I misunderstood! Mind linking your Armory?

I ran 6 heroics with a guild one night and got just as many plate drops and I had to spend about 350g to get the enchantments and enhancements to keep me above cap. I have a 16-slot bag full of alternative gear that I can juggle around and gain a little defense at the cost of stamina and whatnot. You may get 2 pieces of plate that you can't use until you get that 3rd piece that, when combined with the other 2, gives you better stats and lets you stay above the crit cap. Min-Maxing, I think it's called.

There really isn't any required gear for WotLK. You just want to have 535 defense rating for heroics and 22kish hp; easily achievable when buffed and entering the dungeon.

My advice without having seen your gear:
Camp the AH for certain BoE blues that drop in heroic instances. There's a nice necklace and the Tattered Castle Drape cloak that will serve you well. Consider having the Tempered Titansteel gear made.
Start with H VH and gather badges and try for the pants there.
H UP is a fun, relatively painless run too and will net a weapon that will last into Naxx.
Grind rep to revered with Wyrmrest for their gear, Argent Crusade revered for their gear and head enchant and then maybe Kirin Tor exalted. Never run a heroic without championing a faction.

Edit: typo

I can't link to the armory from work - Borsock (Only one with that name)

Both Trinkets are lame. (Yeah, one is from the overlord quest in HFP)
I like both rings. There are upgrades, but I feel like time spent elsewhere would be more valuable.

The shoulders suck and the back sucks.

Any other suggestions plz.

Waist: http://www.wowarmory.com/item-info.xml?i=37801
Socket it and gem for defense or stamina as needed

Rings are just fine.

Back: http://www.wowarmory.com/search.xml?searchType=items&pr=Vashj&pn=Borsock&pi=43363
That could be construed as an update but expertise is good too.

Shoulders: http://www.wowarmory.com/item-info.xml?i=37115 Camp the AH, should be a fairly common and cheap item. Throw an enhancement on them from Aldor/Scryer

Again, enchants/enhancements will do you very well.

Those are all AH upgrades and should be cheap/quick to get. Other than that, start targeting heroics to work on the Epics. Red Sword of Courage, Belt from H AN (and the trinket), Wrist from H OK, Pants from H VH, etc.

I think all of this stuff is in the FAQs, I'm really just that bored!

you could go kill the panther boss..or solo attunmen..or run some heroics.

As a paladin you can do everything!

Thanks for the input. I tried Heroic Oc and it was pretty much a ****-show. I just don't have the STA to take that kind of beating.

H. Culling was fine for the trash mobs, then we got to Meatman (Forget name) and the healer let it slip that he had just ding'd 80 that day and that he was wearing his old 70's healing set. (He had been DPS from 70-80 I assume.) I had /inspected, but just seen purple and not actually looked into the matter. Meat was hitting me for about 3.5k to 4.5k damage and his heals were hitting for about 3.2k - (I'm a tank and my heals hit that hard) We dropped to Reg. Cot Culling and the Epic ring dropped - Edward the Odd... Sells for about 3k on my server. A guildie needed it, but hey - cool drop.

If you have 540 Defense but are low-ish on stam, put Heavy Borean Armor kits on anything you don't have enchanted (+18 stam for each kit, cost about 35-50g each on most servers). Put those on 3-4 pieces of armor and you have an additional 72 stam.

Start with Heroic UK. There is a decent tank sword that drops from the first boss that will do nicely until you can get the purple sword from H UP (which is much harder). Also do Drak'Tharon Keep which is pretty easy even if you only have 21-22k health. Ordinarily I would recommend getting to 15 emblems and getting the libram of Obstruction as your first purchase, but you may find that getting to 25 and getting the Chained Military Gorget neclace might be a more important first piece. Those 2 pieces should be your first emblem upgrades imo.

Here is how I would rank heroics in difficulty according to my own experience:

Utgarde Keep (simple)
Drak'Tharon Keep (need a decent healer)
Nexus (know the boss fights and it isn't hard at all.. and FIVE emblems!)
CoS (tons of undead which makes it not too bad)
VH (I ranked it as harder than CoS because if your DPS in your group is low it is automatic phail)
Utgarde Pinnacle (once you learn the Skadi fight this really isn't a hard instance)
Halls of Lightning
Occulus
Halls of Stone
Azjol'Nerub
Old Kingdom

I may have forgotten one or two, but I think I got them all.... Some may disagree with the specific order I listed, but that is my experience anyway.

I would say focus on the first 3-5 on the list until you get some better gear through drops and emblems and then start working your way up to the rest. Once you hit about 23k health and have a healer you can depend on, any of the heroics are possible with a decent group that knows the fights and can execute them. Even if you are an UBER tank, make sure the healer and the 3 dps have reasonable stats and ARE COMPETENT. A hard heroic becomes pretty darn easy with a good healer and 3 good dps.

Here you go!

http://www.tankspot.com/forums/f97/39462-wotlk-tanking-gear-list.html

Only thing I don't buy into is his trinket ratings. The valor trinket is awesome as is the scarab, moroes and lavanthors.

Would anyone mind commenting on the gossamer one? Relies on a proc to do anything. Am curious if it's useful.

Just because you hit 540 doesn't mean your gear is set for raids. You should shoot for everything on that guys list and get enchanted up with avoidance/defense and then stam chants.

Gossamer = 111 Stamina... That's what it's there for. The proc is just another thing -- yea, it's not bad but in the big picture it doesn't matter. The 111 Stamina does.

I find it somewhat disturbing that the http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=36993;source=live isnt on the trinket list. It is almost as good as the defense trinket from Naxx, and it is attainable in REGULAR HoL, so you can get it before you even hit 80 with a little luck.
