retri tanking heroics+?Follow

ello,

Just been in a heroic with a DK tank, and started to wonder if a paladin could tank in retri specc with righteous fury on? ofc he would still have to be def cap and stack alot of parry and dodge, but would it be possible?

Just a thought..

Death knights get defensive talents in all their specs. Paladins do not.

So yeah you can tank some easy things just because you have plate and can hold hate through righteous fury/dps, but you're not really going to tank anything that needs serious tanking.

I did tank Black Morass, but I probably could have tanked it on my rogue too.

I might be blind, cuz I cant see many of those compared to a pala tank or warrior tank? I might just be me, dunno..

anyway, the idea is to keep righteous fury up and be def cap with alot of dodge and parry, and ALOT of dmg to generate the threat. Here's a suggestion to a build for dodge, parry, armor, dmg reduction and alot of dmg! ;)

Suggestion

I know it sounds wrong and crazy, but I think it might work! :)

Blood: Blade Barrier, Spell Deflection, Veteran of the Third War, Vampiric Blood, and Will of the Necropolis can all be considered tanking talents, not to mention all the self healing don't hurt either.

Unholy: Anticipation, Shadow of Death, Magic Suppression, Anti-Magic Zone, and Bone Shield are the ones that stick out to me most as tanking talents.

Of course all the DPS talents to a lesser extent as tanks do put out much more DPS than they used to. And Frost is littered with more tank like talents.

Point here is to show that all 3 builds for DKs are made to be able to tank. Blizz first stated there would be a PvE tree, PvP tree, and tank tree, but they changed their design philosophy to make all 3 trees viable in each aspect of the game. Yes, one tree may be "best" at something, but all 3 will work.

This is not the case for Paladins. Retribution has 1 tanking talent: Deflection. The rest is for boosting DPS or is more suitable to PvP play. I agree that yes you can tank some minor content as Ret, but I would not let a Ret specced Paladin tank a Heroic for me unless "maybe" they had full Naxx25 tanking gear.

As far as the "Ret tanking build": imo, just go Ret or go Prot, don't try to do both. You can do that once dual specs are released.

i have tanked all low and mid level northrend instances as dps Ret. i was set to tank HoL for a guildie and i backed out last minute to let a real tank in.

three types of Ret tanking:
1. straight dps. heavy AP and crit allows you to pummel through anything. mediocre stam and lack of avoidance gear makes you relatively squishy. cant do heroics.

2. straight tank. heavy avoidance and stam allow you to take hits. lack of real talents make crits hurt. a shield becomes close to useless w/o Deflection. threat is hard to hold even with RF up. you'll be missing a major stat no matter how you gear. a miss is fatal for the party. cant do heroics.

3. hybrid. high avoidance and stam allow you to take hits. gearing for loads of agi and dodge make you hard to hit. you would equipt a 2Her for threat. it would take 3 or 4 hits to down you. if you have a superb healer it is possible. the question would be: why?

no matter how you cut it, you will lose. either not enough mitigation or not enough threat. the gear required would suggest that you just spend the gold to respec.

If you're specced far enough into the protection tree to get Holy Shield, you're not ret anymore...you're protection.

You have no business tanking in heroics without Holy Shield.

Ah, sweet memories of tanking Hellfire Citadel on my Retribution Paladin along with two other Paladins and two Death Knights before the "to the ground" thing.

Good times.
