Level 71 n00b issues...Follow

#1 Dec 29 2008 at 10:37 PM Rating: Decent
I've done nothing but quest all the way up to level 71. Mostly because that's what's easiest for me since my time tends to be limited (I have kids...) But now I'd like to try to get to the point of having equipment from runs and really starting to get into playing and all that that entails (I'm going to have more time to play in the next several months.) So, I'm looking for direction insofar as any recommended guides (I just respec'ed to balance from feral) and maybe even a guild to mentor and help me out (I'm on Aerie Peak/Horde)

I've played other MMOs so I'm not completely ignorant when it comes to this sort of stuff, I just need some guidance. =P

Thanks!

Check the sticky at the top of the druid forum list for information about builds, abilities, etc. That's a great place to get info about the class.

If you're very brave, you can start joining pickup groups (pug's) by using the in-game looking for group or looking for more features (I prefer the looking for more personally, but to each their own). Just make sure you have blocked out a few hours for a run if you are looking for an instance run. They may not take that long (I have no experience with Wrath instances...yet), but it's better to be safe than sorry. Your group will appreciate knowing what type of druid you are (balance) in advance, but be prepared to fill alternate roles if necessary.

Check out the realm forum (you can find a list of them off the world of warcraft main site) for your realm before posting anything on it. See if there are guilds recruiting 70+ players. If you don't see anything that fits you, go ahead and post like you did here and see who responds. Always, always, always check out guilds before joining. Go with them on an instance run (or two or three), check out their website if they have one, listen in on vent if they have it. You get the idea. Much less heartache that way if it doesn't work out later.

Good luck!

ToeJuice,

I would add this. If your ultimate goal is to hit lvl 80, then I would not worry about instancing right now or finding groups. If your time is limited I would simply quest (fastest exp rate) you could use either one of jame's guides to help you along. Just google, "jame's guide".

Then, once you hit 80 that's when your gear really matters. At that point mostly all you'll be doing is instances for gear. At 71 the quest reward gear should be enough to help you level along fine. By questing you're going to get more experience, and you just don't need great gear at 71 to level yourself.

If you're still really wanting to group spend some time finding a good guild like the previous poster said. It might take some effort but it's going to be much better than joining "pug" groups through the LFG channel. Pug's can be absolute nightmares and running with guildies will help you establish relationships/friends for when you do hit 80 and start raiding.

Good luck and have fun!!

Jedius, I would argue the opposite; unless things have changed drastically in Wrath over BC, the highest level dungeons are less forgiving than their lower level counterparts. Pulls are larger, mobs are harder, mechanics require a lot more attention from the entire group. I'm not 80 yet so I cannot corroborate this thought, just putting it out there.

I find instancing as I level to be fun and even more rewarding in the sense that those instance drops turn the inferior quest rewards into even more gold in my pocket, plus leveling via instances means more quests available to convert to gold at 80. I know money isn't really a problem anymore with the vast choice of daily quests we have now, but it's still nice to be making cash from 'storyline' type adventures instead of the same droll repeatable tasks every day.

It really depends on what playstyle you enjoy. I was suggesting questing to the OP just because he has limited time. I can't count the number of hours I've spent organizing groups, then getting to the instance, then wiping time after time because you found a crappy pug. I'd rather quest and get the exp.

On the other hand...The Wrath instances seem to have far less trash pulls though that TBC, so they can be done quicker from my experience. I've done about 90% of the Wrath instances and raids. What I did was run them each once just to get the quests. When you factor in the exp from the instance and the instance quests you're doing pretty well in terms of exp/hour.

Never having done a non-heroic level 80 instance, I am making assumptions here, but I would imagine they are significantly easier than heroics, which means they can't be very difficult at all.

My suggestion would be to just quest away while having yourself in LFG for an instance. If an offer pops up then take it, but don't hang around town waiting for a group. The odd instance breaks up the leveling grind a bit.

Ah, yes this is actually what I meant. Eschewing instances entirely is a bad idea, but I'm always out questing if I'm online and not in the middle of something. :)

Oye. I suggest something alternative for the OP which is decent advice...citing pros and cons and my posts are rated normal. The other posters are in agreeance with what the OP was asking (even if it's not the best advice) and are "excellent". Unbelievable, sometimes I wonder about the populace...and little things like that just confirm my what I'm thinking.
