Raiding talent builds for 3.03/3.08Follow

#1 Dec 29 2008 at 10:55 AM Rating: Excellent
Arcane
57/3/11 - Arcane+IV
-- Notice the absence of slow, I personally pick it up for when I am soloing/world pvp. In 3.08 any slowing (attack speed (thunderclap - which should be up at all times), cast speed, snare effect) will count for the slowing needed for TTW to work.

58/3/8 + 2 - Arcane + EP
-- Again, no slow. The two points can be spent in Magic Absorption, Student of the Mind, ice shards, or other talents you see fit.

++ Note: Elemental Precision gives +3% to all spell hit in 3.08 (not just fire/frost) so arcane gets 6% with both talents. Updated: I chose to pick up arcane stability for the push back resistance as we will be casting a lot of arcane missiles.

Fire+Frostfire
0/58/13 - Base FFB
-- The defacto highest single-target build. This is the base of where other combinations can be made.

^ outdated, only worked for Tier7 content.

18/53/0 - No hit, Fireball + FM + TTW
-- With the changes to how TTW will be applied this build can give the highest potential dps (within +/- 2% of FFB) come 3.08, assuming that you have someone putting some sort of slowing (attackspeed or movement) effect (thunderclap etc) on the boss.

Frost
0/0/54 - Base points to spend for frost (FrB spam)
-- This is the basic points that you will most likely want to spend. Other points can be spread through arcane for focus magic etc and other places.

Please add your ideas/changes/etc and reasoning for them if possible. If you can use a talent calculator from mmo-champion (so that you can include the glyphs etc as well) that would be nice, but not necessary.

0/50/21 is what i am running
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-talents.xml?r=Area+52&n=Malanir

tried the living bomb/frostfire spec and just didnt like it much, this spec gives cold snap for the extra icy veins per fight and with the frostfire bolts gained from not sitting in living bomb globals the dps is actually still very close. Not to mention the double ice block when in progression and the mana is in very good shape from not burning it out on living bomb.
On almost all fights you get 3 icy veins with this. First as soon as tank is ahead, second when cd is up, coldsnap to 3rd, 2 of them will always be in molten fury range.

5118 on patch tonight with this spec.
http://wowwebstats.com/gxfaeizjlmh23?m&s=126839-161115

I never use mage armor with this spec and have no mana problems, I run Major glyphs-frostfire,molten armor, imp scorch.
I do have frost channeling and burning soul, because i abhor pushback, but i may switch that to flame throwing next week. Might leave it alone though because flame throwing hasnt really been much of a problem for me since it doesnt affect frostfire and one of our two mages are always in scorch range.

Nice build, I forgot to mention that one. When you have a molten fury range that lasts long enough for two icy veins it is indeed nice. Although come 3.08 combustion crits will count towards hot streak procs (as they currently do not). It may be worthwhile to pick it up. I hardly have any mana issues while keeping LB up (refreshing it approximately ever 12-14 seconds depending on combustion and using the GCD for hot streak procs to avoid ignite munching).

I currently have a couple points in shatter and 1 in blast wave for everything outside of raiding, but I'm curious about Playing with Fire. I personally did not choose it due to having survivability issues, but that's getting better as I and the groups I'm with are learning fights better. But that could definitely improve my dps. However, 3% more damage taken? Shew. Even though my survivability is better, I think that in some situations that 3% probably keeps me alive. Same with fiery payback, but I never use pyro unless I have HS up, so I'm not sure how useful it is, overall.

Interested in opinions on this. I notice you have less HP than me, Anobix, so maybe it's just that I need more practice as a raider, being more mobile, etc?

P.S. I don't have mana issues anymore after getting 2pct7 and putting my mana gem in a macro. Probably should have done that before, so I didn't wait until I needed mana badly to use the gems, which, then it's on CD, which means, etc.

3% extra free damage is very worthwhile. I rarely take damage and taking 3% extra is nothing that a healer can't handle, especially with warlocks lifetapping etc

Fiery payback is fairly useless as you should not be under 35% for any significant amount of time.

I'm having trouble running any numbers because there are few calculators that take into account use of Mage Armor + Glyph of Mage armor as an alternative to Molten.

Consider:

-> Arcane as a main talent tree can be played either as a mana dump for higher DPS OR conservatively - moreso than FFB.
-> Arcane Meditation, Student of the Mind, Mage Armor, and Glyph of Mage armor provide substantial MP5 through casting.
-> Arcane Subtlety and Precision provide considerably higher Hit rating and threat control.
-> Prismatic Cloak provides AoE Damage mitigation as well as a considerable amount more of threat control.
-> Boss AoEs will not critical (Molten Armor), however they can be resisted and absorbed (Mage armor, Magic Absorbtion, Encanters Absorbtion).

What does this spell to me?

A stacking of Spell Power and Haste mixed with Spirit and Intellect moreso than a FFB Spec, gearing in Post-T7 gear (sometimes considered Healer/Boomkin cloth gear) with Mage Armor up as opposed to Molten Armor would allow a considerable "mana-dump" with consistantly high mana regeneration through cast with the ability to "Absorb" AoEs by choice through Mana Shield or Frost/Fire Ward for an even larger mana-dump with even larger DPS that can then be made back up with a shorter cooldown Evocation.

By forgoing the necessity to crit in order to do damage, this build opens up use for some of the highest-end gear - much of which has no Crit on it (and I find fail to be upgrades to my more outdated pieces).

While this seems like oddball rambling, if you take a look at the difference between many of the 10 and 25 man Cloth gear, you will see a sharp rise in Haste and far fewer Crit items. Furthermore, these pieces lack the +Mp5 of a classic Priest item, leading me to believe the items are designed for Boomkins - not really all that different gear build than a Mage.

So I guess the question is... In very high-end deep Arcane would a Mage benefit more from Mage Armor over Molten Armor?

P.S. - To all FFB Mages currently at a 10-Man Raid gearing level, do you find certain fights to be a drain on your mana? 25-man Loatheb comes to mind the most, but I find on a few occasions in 25-mans that Gems arn't keeping me up (I need more T7 - this might help), my Evocation's cooldown is too long, and my eventual OoM DRASTICALLY hurts my DPS.

I do not believe that mage armor is a valid solution unless you absolutely have to use it because of the huge amount of difference 5% crit (glyphed of course) can make. I'm sure you could run it through the rawr simulator (linked in sig) to see what would work best for you given fight situations etc.

I didn't have too many mana problems as long as we had a replenishment buff. Without that it is a bit more of a strain, but certainly not as much as straight fireball spec (which is more mana hungry). You should have very little mana problems with loateb when you should have close to 100% crit rate where master of elements etc should be keeping your mana pretty high (that and a replenishment buff of course).

When raiding/grouping Slow is a very useless spell. I have yet to find any non-trash mob that is actually works on and in a group you don't need to slow trash mobs usually.

Shoot even soloing I don't use it anymore. Once again unless its an elite I don't need it slowed because I burn it down so quick. And naturally any elite that I am trying to kill usually is once again immune to snare so pointless.

I am mostly arcane with a couple of points in ice for the freeze effect. When I was 70 using this spec I never ran out of mana in heroics/raids/pvp/etc. Now that I am 80 if I don't use mage armor I run out of mana on boss fights alot.

Well that also depends on what your rotation is that you are using. As stated before if you are arcane you should have ttw and slow (at least for raiding as the rebuff still counts on bosses) at least until 3.08
#12 Jan 02 2009 at 12:18 AM Rating: Decent
I thought the numbers were run that once you had even a ridiculously small amount of SP, the GCD it takes to cast the slow isn't worth the TtW, especially if you could hunker down in 1 spot.

As it stands, Slow+TtW is almost entirely a PVP tool.

I'm sorry, but I have no idea what you're asking here. Please, better spelling and more clarity of message. Are you wanting to add a fire build to the list here? Are you wanting to know how to use a fire build for yourself? Is it something else I'm not understanding?

He's the same poster that has the thread right below this that I already replied to. Either trolling or unable to read English.

Our mages are currently struggling a bit in terms of damage, do you know if theres any links (like the wrath scoreboard on elitist jerks) for the patch yet? I don't think any would object to going FFB, but it would be interesting to see how the different specs compare.

Second question is I know at least part of FFBs superiority is due to the DK rune increasing frost damage by 5%. As far as I know none of our DKs are using this and I was wondering if there's a certain number of mages that you would need to make that rune a bonus to raid damage compared to whatever the DK would be using otherwise.

On the 13/58 fire build what is the reasoning behind putting points in spirit and burning soul instead of at least 1 point for blast wave? I've found the knock back with blast wave to be a life saver on some occasions and helps with some of the ad fights in naxx.

BW is pretty frowned upon by a lot of tanks as it really messed up where the adds are going and hurts their aggro generation. I can only really see one use for it and it is a double edged sword (Gluth) - If you don't time it correctly or if there is lag you will send them (Zombie Chow) flying into Gluth to heal him.

Can you link the 13/58/0? I also believe the reason burning soul was chosen was for the knockback resistance and of course the threat reduction that you will not have from frost channeling. The spirit talent I believe is just a filler and is completely unnecessary unless you are deep arcane (where it is still iffy).

I guess it's just a difference in raid philisophy. Our raid leader prefers us to have blast wave in case an add gets away from a tank or someone pulls threat. That and the naxx fight is all we use it for. We are usally back with the healers and use it as sort of a last line of defense for them.

That build should be good unless you are hitting pushback or having threat issues (in which I would drop the points in DB+BW or maybe one or the other (depending on your RL views) and a point out of world in flames and throw it into burning soul.

LOL. I wish I was having threat issues. I land squarely in the middle on average while sometimes in the top 5 depending on the fight. Even our mage lead, who prior to wrath was always in the top 3, is now happy to be in the top 10 on average.
#23 Jan 15 2009 at 9:03 AM Rating: Good
That's strange. I rarely have trouble placing in the top 5 or at least one of the mages if not the top 3 and one other mage and I are always riding the tanks threat (even with threat reduction talents). Hmm, dunno, gear difference maybe?

I'm looking into respeccing to Arcane for heroics once I hit 80, and I was looking at your first Arcane build you have listed. You have Frost warding as one of the extra frost talents and I was curious as to why. I remember you telling me a while back that it was a useless talent and I shouldn't bother putting points into it. What is the benefit of having Frost warding in this particular build? Surely there are some other lower end frost talents that would be more useful? Perhaps a couple of points in Ice shards?

You are completely right, I forgot to go back and edit those when arcane started to make more of an impact. I will be taking those points out and into ice shards for slightly better blizzarding action

edit: also fixed the glyphs:

should be Arcane Blast + Arcane Missiles + Molten Armor (or mage armor if you are really having mana problems, but you should be changing your rotation rather than your armor)
