Frostmages and RoguesFollow

Right. No whining, I promise. Seriously, put away the Elementals.

Now, earlier today I just had my **** so thoroughly handed to me that I had to double check to see if DKs suddenly could summon Elementals and Blink. As it turned out, my target was still a Mage, no matter how many times I tried to kill her. A gnome even, ergh. Now, I'm mostly PvP specced, and mostly geared in mind for PvP. And she wiped the floor with me, repeatedly. I could get close to her once, maybe twice after the first attack, but all damage done by the time she was away again was soaked by a shield.

I literally couldn't get that woman down past 70% health.

Now, this isn't to whine about this, since I really don't mind dying in WoW PvP. I'm an old Eve Online veteran, and used to far harsher penalties than a two minute corpserun. I'm more curious though, and really want to learn from Frost Mages. I don't know the class well, since I've never played it past 50ish. And thus I turn to you guys. How the hell do Rogues kill you? What is your greatest fear in a fight, as a Frost Mage?

The only thing I can think of would be horrendous amounts of burst damage since not even Stuns can stop you guys. Then the Shield comes into play. And the "Armor" flavor of the day. And your own roots and snares with that Elemental.

Honestly, I'm wracking my brain and can't come up with the answer. You are clothies and supposed to lie down and play dead when you see us Rogues, but that one specc I just can't take down. Fire Mages are relatively easy. The same goes for Arcane (only met one, so can't say that as fact yet), but you Frost Mages whoop my **** so hard it's not even funny.

Will you share your secrets? How does a Rogue beat you guys?

Stunlock + blind + deadly throw + cos + shadowstep normally does it. Ifvyou don't get the jump you can be bursted down.

Yeah in my experience, it's generally whoever knows who's there first wins. Player skill is a factor too. I could jump a Mage, get them down real low, have a DK deathgrip me from forever away and just Sprint back to the mage and dump 4-5pt evisc. Good Mages know how to Blink and Invis (Grrrrr).

I could usually get most rogues if I saw them first, when I was frost. Of course, I very rarely did.

Offtopic, I guess, but last nite I pvp'd for the first time as fire. I ended up doing second most damage on horde side. Wow! The second round had ALL dks/pallies on the alliance side, so I didn't do so well, but it looks like fire will be as fun for me in pvp as frost was, which I did not expect. I was just trying to get the achievement done (or part of it before it was bedtime), but I figured that I wouldn't do much pvp until duel spec comes out. I think I'll try this a little more. :)

Wow ... tough question.

Hubby has a rogue, so he could add some insight, but he's skiing atm.

We've dueled a couple times, and I've beaten him more often than not, which really irritates him. Generally he plays his class just that much better than I do, but my little gnome is a tough cookie.

Like Anobix said, keeping us stunned and silenced at all times is your best bet. We're pretty much sitting ducks if the buttons don't work!

Frost is a little tougher to bring down thanks to our ice armor that can basically freeze you without us doing anything. God I'm so stupid, what's the name of that thing??? lol

I'll add to this when he gets home and let you know what he would do!

The mage vs. rogue fight is very intricate and depends highly on cooldowns, skill and gear (especially from a rogues perspective, weapons especially).

We each have so many counters to each other, it just depends who is better at using theirs.

Mage vs. Rogue = practice, practice, practice.

Rogues used to terrify me. Now I love fighting them. Ice barrier will root them as often as they stun me; burning determination means I no longer fear interrupts; glyph of icy veins means I can wipe crippling/mind-numbing poison.

It is a cd battle. It's just that we have suddenly gained new ones. The way rogues have gotten me is by opening with the silence move (garrotte I believe)? I recommend that. Also, vanish works better on us now since we can no longer spam rank 1 ae or blizzard. Watch for IV. Once the mage has popped that, s/he is a prime candidate for snaring.

In my experience, on my Frost Mage, it is about 50/50 between myself and Rogues.

I get, literally, torn apart by most Rogues in BGs, I am not exactly sure why, but it is a common occurrence. It might be that I am distracted by the multiple targets, and do not pay attention. As a human, Perception is invaluable for any situation where a stealther might be around.

However, in World PvP, I seem to do a bit better. If I get lucky and detect the Rogue, or see them from a distance, the fights usually come down to if I proc FoF, multiple times. If this happens, the Rogue is usually sitting there, frozen, more than likely screaming at me for a nerf to Mages as I quickly whittle away their hitpoint pool.

The more likely scenario, or, at least, the more common, is that I get stunned, and about 1/2 to 3/4 of my hitpoints are gone. If I can recover, break free, get some distance, then it is on. Out comes WE, and every damn trinket, trick, Cooldown, you name it. It is at this point it can go either way, a clever Rogue will usually still kick my ***** but if I get lucky on criticals, it is...well..ugly for the Rogue.

I have some experience from both sides. All I can recommend is saving your Cooldowns, timing is what Rogues excel at. And throw all of that brutal burst damage as fast as possible.

Good luck, it is fun experience either way.
