Is it the faster the better or is the slower with higher end damage?

Generally speaking: Given two weapons of equal DPS, take the faster one.

So always take one with the higher DPS?

Always take the one with higher DPS, but if there is a faster one with comparable DPS available, go for that. There's a point at which the DPS difference outweighs the speed difference, but I'm not sure what it is.

The reason you go for faster weapons is (mainly) because of poison damage.

Ok, thanks.

If you're grinding your teeth over a 5 DPS difference and/or a .1 speed difference, get a spreadsheet =)

Otherwise look at DPS, speed and get a feel for the stat weights. They're only rough guides though, so... grain of salt.

Copy and Pasted from EJ (edit: AP = 1)

For Mutilate:

Stat EP
Str 1.1
Agi 2.0
Crit 1.6
Exp 1.9
Haste 1.4
ArPen 1.0

Hit is worth about 2.2 below the yellow hit cap, 1.8 below the poison hit cap, and 1.3 above both caps.

For Combat:

Stat EP
Str 1.1
Agi 2.0
Crit 1.5
Exp 1.6
Haste 1.4
ArPen 1.2

Hit is about 1.8 below the yellow hit cap, 1.6 below the poison hit cap, and 1.4 thereafter.

Doesn't that mean that once you reach the hit cap (where your miss chance is eliminated), you'd still pick hit over strength and armor pen?

It's very unlikely that you'll pass the auto-attack hit cap (755 iirc)

Obviously not. I'm assuming this is a "haha, you're wrong!" nitpick (and nitpicking taken to the extreme, may I add; I doubt anyone would have been confused) phrased in question form for additional smart-**** points.

A lot of rogues over the yellow hit cap, at least the ones doing 25mans and are decently geared, typically gem/enchant for agil/ap and only get more hit through gear.

Get a spreadsheet, and see what works best for you.

Yeah, whatever.

So whatever happened to the normal hit cap? It wasn't unreachable pre-WOTLK, was it now?
