Slam vs Heroic StrikeFollow

#1 Dec 24 2008 at 9:47 PM Rating: Decent
Yah, low post count because I enjoy lurking. But this has been eating me up for some time, and I'm looking for answers.

Slam was changed to suspend the swing timer as opposed to resetting it. Means that in essence, you don't make any kind of attack (nor gain rage) until that 1.5 cast time is done. Heroic strike does damage on the next main hand swing, but you don't generate any rage from said attack AND costs 15 rage.

So the question:

For a fury spec, when Bloodthirst and Whirlwind are both on cooldown, does slam or heroic strike produce higher dps?

i also have low post count, for similar reasons. i would guess slam would produce better results, as its scaled with AP and weapon damage(correct me if im wrong). With two 2handers this would increase weapon dmg(again correct me if im wrong). Heroic strike seems like a better rage DUMP, but not if you're looking to do so while maintaining or increasing dps. hope this helped.

HS is better. Slam causes your attack time to be 'paused' while you cast it. Yes you cast it, like a caster (clothie). And just like clothie's, you don't get to auto attack while your casting.

Let me explain a little more.

HS lets your off hand continue to generate rage and deal damage at a normal rate, Slam pauses both main and off hands and doesn't gain you any rage while doing so.

Slam's that are instant though (talented), are better than HS.

HS and Slam are both affected by AP and weapon damage.

For a lvl 80;

Slam	Rank 8
15 Rage	Melee Range
1.5 sec cast
Requires Melee Weapon
Slams the opponent, causing weapon damage plus 250.

Heroic Strike	Rank 13
15 Rage	Melee Range
Next melee
Requires Melee Weapon
A strong attack that increases melee damage by 495 and causes a high amount of threat. Causes 173.25 additional damage against Dazed targets.

So, HS actually does more damage per hit base skill.

On wowwiki they claim that HS and Slam are both not normalized. So they gain the same amount of bonus from AP, with the same weapons.

Cool. Didn't realize that the OH weapon would continue to generate rage on HS usage. That about solves that question for me then.

Much appreciated!

im a arms warrior.

And pretty much stay in battle stance all the time.

Im too the point where i dont even bother with HS, or slam. I just use mortal strike and stack sunder armor during cool down. And then occasionally use over-power.

Is that a pretty ****** way of playing>? Got any tips.

Use rend.

Then use overpower more.

well my usual run through is something like this.

Battle shout.
Demoralizing shout.
Sunder
rend
MS
Sunder
MS
Sunder
MS

Than throw Overpower in there whenever available.

You'll be slamming in a raid (instance). When MS is on CD and you don't have an OP proc, you'll be using slam instead of sunder.

The top DPS wars in raids I've parsed usually don't use slam. At least not as a major percent of their damage(sometimes it shows <1%) Losing an off hand, costing 15 rage and pausing swings for less damage or costing 15 rage for HS, doing more damage and keeping your off hand swinging. I don't see how slam is better, it never parsed better when I tried it. I've never parsed my own damage using it in raid, only out of raid, as I raid prot.

I'd say HS > Slam though.

The OP was about fury, I was responding to an arms warrior. And yes they use slam.

Fury warriors should use slam as well, when Bloodsurge procs. Which doesn't lose you any offhand/mainhand swing time. Arms warriors should use Improved Slam in between MS, rend, BS, and OP.

...I even wrote what you said right above in the post...

As an arms warrior, slam rarely fits into my rotation. Between MS, and Sudden Death and Taste for Blood procs, I rarely have downtime that allows the use of Slam. When I don't have procs up (which is unusual) I typically use the time to refresh rend, or apply a TC, Sunder, or DS. I won't say I never use it, but it's a rare part of my DPS rotation.
