I have a level 43 Dwarven Paladin and was curious between which crafting profession I should take. Ive been mining and skinning until now but want to drop skinning for either BS, ENG, or JC. I heard the BS armor isnt good until 80. Also hear that engineering is expensive. JC looks interesting for the gems and accessories, but I am not sure which to go with. I like the goggles and all, but with the ranged pull coming in the patch, the dynamite isnt as necessary.

I dont know if I want to tank because I am not a great leader, I solo more. I suppose I wouldnt mind healing or DPSing. I am a ret paladin currently. I have a decent amount of money, So would it be a wise choice to go BS for armor and weapons? Jewelcrafting seems to be the most unique out of the three, but I am still not sure. Any suggestions are welcome.(As long as they pertain to my question.) Thank you.

Engineering offers perks and oddities. The goggles are nice, but this time around they aren't going to last as long as they did in TBC. (I think the heroic T7 head is better than the goggles). The Sonic Blaster trinket is half decent, if for no other reason than its got the most stamina of the pre-heroic trinkets currently available. The secondary benefit is meh for pallies. I kind of think Blizzard decided that since engineers get the motorcycles...that everyone wants but very, very few can afford...that they can let us slide in other areas. Shame on them.

Blacksmithing gives you extra sockets on select gear slots. Anything else it offers atm is something you could just as easily get from another blacksmith.

If I had to do it all over again, I'd go JC for my pally, just for all the wicked BoP gems and trinkets you can make.

If you plan on playing solo, JC probably would offer you the best personal benefit.

If you were planning on tanking, I would probably take BS over JC, but that would be more for the extra 2 sockets and the convenience factor.

If you are a really adventurous sort, keep mining and skinning on this guy until you get to at least level 70 and just make as much gold as possible... if you add up the cost of mounts and training, you will spend about 8000g between your epic land mount, regular flyer, epic flyer, and cold-weather flight training. It would be ideal to have at least that much saved up by 70.

What you could then do is go with a combination like JC/Enchanter on this toon so that you could enchant all of your own equipment and gem all of your own equipment. In order to fund this, you use any gold that you have above and beyond what you need for mounts/flyers/training AND you roll an Alt who has mining/skinning or mining/herbalism or skinning/herbalism so your Alt becomes your "farmer".

Of course, in order to do this, you have to have the time to level an alt to a high enough level to continually provide mats/money to your main character, which does take a lot of time and effort. However, this can be done a little at a time to maximize the rested experience you can build up on your Alt. Eventually, your JC/Enchanter would be making a ton of money (once you get your skills high enough), but the Alt would still be useful for providing raw materials and just making extra money to add to the pool.

I guess it depends on how much time you like to spend playing and if you feel dedicated enough to level and Alt (which can be fun and can let you try a different class for some variety). Another option for creating a "farmer" Alt is to wait until you hit level 55 and then roll a DK to be your farmer (much easier since they start at level 55).

If you are going to stick with one toon, I would say wait a bit and then go miner/JC. If you want to get more exotic and go with 2 crafting professions on your main, either start leveling an Alt from level one just for a change of pace and to develop a farmer, or go with the get to level 55 and roll a DK farming alt method.

From a purely min-max perspective, i believe the highest benifit would be Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting. The added sockets from BS, and the Jeweler's gems from JC add up to a large stat boost.

I went mining / enchant for my ret pally.
My enchanting is still in the low 100's and I'm a little underwhelmed so far.

Given that I want to get a profession with the intention of benefitting my paladin and all of my alts, and not try to make money by spamming the trade channel, is it more worthwhile to switch enchanting for JC?

Is it most beneficial to have enchanting and JC on the same character or is it jsut ask OK to have one profession on each alt?

I'm a miner/smith. You can get as much out of blacksmithing as you're willing to put in to it. There will be excellent gear available to you as you level so long as you take the time to collect the necessary materials. If you put the effort in to some of the old level 60 reps, you can make items that will last in to your mid-60s. Some of the level 70 epic patterns will last in to the mid-70s. At level 80, the epic pieces are BOE, but you can still make a good income selling belt buckles and shield spikes and by doing commission work.

On my Protadin I decided to do mining/Enchanting. I figured at first that I would do mining/BS but only issue with that was the fact of how expensive BS can really be. Also just from looking ahead it always seemed like i'd be able to replace BS gear very easily buy instanced gear. One thing i've noticed is that my Stats are FAAAAR better then any other tank i've met around my level and gear range because of the fact that every item of my gear has Str, Def, STa, HP, Stats enchanted on it. Obviously at lvl 75-80 there is some amazing gear that can be crafted and I figured with mining i'd still be able to cut down on getting the stuff made significantly by Smelting my own mats.

I'm also a Tailor on my priest so its nice for me to be able to get my own Infinite dust. Hope that helped at least a little.

BTW when you enchant you get a +24 STA enchant to your rings that only can be done on your own gear. 48 extra STA is quite a bit of hp.

until 80 I go with the traditional gathering skills on my alts just to save gold
mining/skinning/herb what have you. With the gold you make you can power level whatever you feel is best for you.

engineering is not as good as it was in TBC

you don't have to be a great leader, just be knowledge of content you are trying to do. that means you will have to be the guy that explains "wut this guy does" everytime..

I like holy the best personally, you can pretty much zone out spamming HL on most heroics. Although tanking is more fun, you need to pay slightly more attention.

right now as I see it for tanks the bs/enchanting min/maxing seams to be the best combo for me. You get the extra sockets and the bonus enchants. There is a lot to be said for the JC gem cuts, and of course mining/bs isn't so bad either.

kind of more leaning towards tank options, but you can kinda get a feel for what might work for you. But I will strongly urge you to keep mining/skinning until you hit 80 the extra gold is insane, esp since this is your only character
