Help Please - How to Improve DPS?Follow

#1 Dec 23 2008 at 12:52 PM Rating: Excellent
I've recently had the chance to run heroic UK and heroic Nexus and in both cases I was not putting out the kind of DPS I was hoping for - I was only putting out about 900. :(

I've been working on upgrading my gear and enchants when I have the gold to do so. My armory link is here. I know a few of my pieces are crappy and I don't yet have all the enchants that I want - I'm using the WotLK Pre-Raid thread as a guideline for what I should be upgrading to.

I have all the standard glyphs and am a cookie-cutter 50/21/0 build. For a shot rotation I'm starting with serpent sting, spamming an auto/steady shot macro with a multishot thrown in, and re-applying serpent sting as needed. I'm using the Terrorshaft Arrow because I don't have access to any of the higher level ammo.

So my questions are as follows:
1) Am I really underperforming or is my expectation of 1100-1200 dps unrealistic given my gear? I personally think this is a pretty modest goal but maybe I'm out in left field.
2) What should I save up for first that will give me the greatest boost to my dps for my buck?
3) What can I do to improve my shot rotation? Can anyone suggest a macro that includes Arcane Shot that might boost my damage output?
4) Which of my stats (e.g., hit rating, AP, etc.) is most likely causing the low damage output and do you have any suggestions to improve it?

Thank you for your time and feedback.

Everythign I would advise to you I have already stated here.

Haha, not to be short or rude. However, like him, your hit is terrible. You need more than double what you have right now. I would also think about different trinkets.

Your gear is not.... bad... for a new 80. Get in some heroics, do more quests as an 80, do more instances. and work towards 267 hit rating.

Also EJ has some very useful space saver macros, things that trigger BW, KC, and a trinket all at the same time. Useful stuff like that.

yep, hit hit hit hit hit.

I actually missed a regular mob the other day, ticked me off. I've been so use to never missing while I was at the hit cap pre-WotLK. Since I'm leveling I haven't focused entirely on hit so I'm way low now but only level 74.

ok im tired of being turned away from raids because people think my dps is too low. here is my build http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Baelgun&n=Abeerr . i think im doing alright i mean im out dpsing everyone i am playing with on normal raids. when i look at the armory sheet of the people that critize my dps their dps does not even compaire mine. Am i looking at something wrong i know i can improve but am i wrong or are they just embarassed that a hunter is putting out more damage then the main tank.

Thank you for your advice! I'm now putting out just shy of 1.5k DPS - a significant improvement over my previous numbers even though my hit is still too low (140/267). I've pugged several heroics and am very pleased with my contribution based on the figures from Recount. At least now I can make a respectable showing in these instances.

OP - I notice that you seem to pay little attention to rep grinds.

These are important for 2 things, shoulder/head enchants and some damn fine pre-raid gear.

Your hit is still low.

Grind the Knights of ebon blade to revered - look up faction in wowhead and it will give you the questlines to do, very easy couple of days tops. This will net you nice shoulders, your head enchant, and a great 2h sword(which you won't use until you complete rep grind #2)

Argent crusade to exalted - at revered you get a good gun and cloak, exalted you get an epic chest and epic leather boots with 111 hit total and a ton of Agi/AP. Huge upgrades for you.

For the time being, if you have money go buy the coilfangs arms to get your rep up with cenarion expedition to get the 36AP 16 hit head enchant from them.

Change your meta, 21crit or 21AGI with 3% crit damage is better.

There are big upgrades for you on AH too, tasseled belt is cheap and very good, ect.

Good luck, keep us posted.

I think I'm going to do those rep grinds too. Thanks for the tip. I got Indis to 77 in the two starting areas alone. Haven't done any higher level stuff really. A few side trips to explore a bit, but yes... New shinies....

ok tell what you think. I think I am doing pretty well. my damage is around 1.7k to 2.0 with crits topping 3.5k or better.

Any help appreciated. I have one other thread I am posting to about similar stuff but I just noticed this one.

thanks

OK folks I have a problem. If the boss fight is straight tank and spank without me having to move I can do an average of 3K DPS. My problems comes when we have to kite a boss or move around quite a bit. When that happens my DPS drops big time compared to other comparably equipped hunters. It seems like it takes forever for me to get my first shot off after having moved. I usually start a tank and spank by stinging, auto shot, steady shot. When I move around I try to get off an instant shot like multi, arcane or aimed shot, but the next steady shot or autoshot seems to take a long time to hit. Am I stomping over autoshot or is there any gear changes I can make? All suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

Oh yeah and despite my extremely low HR for some reason I don't miss very often. Currently in heroics with an eye on 10 man Naxx.

ponx grab I'd grab an add with an auto-shot castbar (zhunter simpelest one i've found)

and practice your rotation on normal mobs ... shot and run while you run shoot arcane when your bar says it's time to auto stop auto steady ...

it's just something you gotta finess ... no easy solution (except maybe faster bow/ more haste)

Understandably, your DPS will drop on movement-type fights. There's not much you can do about this, as Hunters require a steady base (IE: non-movement) in order to pull the big numbers.

The above poster did give some good advice. If you know when your Autos are going to go off, stopping for half a second will allow you to do juuuuust that much more DPS.

Also, get a new meta gem.
