DK for FarmingFollow

#1 Dec 21 2008 at 9:23 PM Rating: Decent
So my main toon is a rogue, which suck at farming.

Mage's AOE make them kings (and I have no idea why all high level mages are not rich beyond their wildest dreams). I have my mage twinked at 39, and don't want to move her up, because the grind would just make me get bored. So in comes the DK.

I noticed a lot of discussions about building a blood or unholy DK for DPS, and yes, I am aware that Frost is primarily for tanking. So QUESTION...

What would be the best build for taking on mobs. Right now, I am speccing blood and frost (frost for the AOE spell), but I'd like to hear some feedback.

peace

I am using an unholy tanking spec with 545 defense and about 2100 AP.
It makes aoe grinding mobs very easy, and with the tank gear you won't take a lot of dmg so grabbing 7-10 mobs is very doable without worrying, just use death strike to top yourself off. My usual rotation after gathering up a group is:
DnD-PS-IT-pest, then use blood boil and death strike, use unholy blight as soon as you have enough runic power. It should only take about 2 sets of rune cooldowns.

Edit: I do recommend getting the DnD glyph as it is not a fear it will freeze mobs in place for 2 seconds that means less damage to you also interrupts spell casts, at 20% per tick per mob this procs a lot for me.

Blood has no down time and high single target dps, I would use this tree for leveling and daily's
Unholy has a bit more chance of down time(you can proven any down time but you will be doing less dps) and a lot of AoE damage

I haven't tried frost that much but it should be a little like unholy in solo pve depending on how you spend your points.

If you want to do some AoE then Unholy or Frost it the way to go, but if you are planing to do a lot of daily's you may wana try Blood(for the zero down time.)

and of course money will come in time no mater what you do (I would guess that I will have the money to get my swift flying mount at 80 and dont worry about it much)

For AOE farming go unholy.

I wouldn't pick blood just for dailies. Dailies get easier with gear anyways, you're not going to have down time in any spec.

when farming, i like Frost pretty good,
I can grind mobs with 2-3 at a time without any downtime, just every 2-3 minutes add 2 death strikes to your rotation and your good to go again
On daily quests, i like the combination of very high single target dps and damn decent burst aoe aswell

I'm 71 and Unholy with only quest greens and Outland blues, and I have absolutely zero problem doing anything except tanking instances in Northrend, and farming anything in Azeroth (Strat, ZG, etc), and any instance in Outland in Hellfire or Coilfang is easy. Auchindoun and above is cake with even a sub-par healer. I haven't been able to solo or duo anything in Northrend yet, but like I said, I'm in quest greens and Outland blues with almost no +defense. I've just begun collecting tanking gear which will make tanking a breeze as I get close to maxing out my defense, but like I said, I have no issues pretty much anywhere. I almost never single-target anything, and I typically pull 5-8 or more mobs depending on how hard they hit and how well I can keep my RP charged for Death Strike with the glyph.

Check WowInsider.com's Lichborne series where they outline tanking and DPS gear upgrades in Northrend, both from quests and drops, and/or start with a Wowhead.com query for plate quest rewards with +Defense (click the Def column header to push higher numbers to the top).

The key to unholy is to use the biggest, slowest two-hander you can find (Voidaxe from Nagrand until you get to Northrend) with Razorice or Fallen Crusader in Blood Presence. All your big hitting spells and abilities depend on weapon damage, so you want to maximize that (frost isn't as dependent upon weapon damage, so you dual wield with two different Runeforging enchants and spam Howling Blast). Also, get the major glyphs of Death and Decay (the 2 second cower is nothing short of amazing for spell and incoming melee damage) and Death Strike (40% healing/damage - keep your RP maxed and only use Death Coil when you know you won't need to heal yourself, or to finish off a runner), and minor glyphs of Pestilence (+5 yards) and Horn of Winter.

Use a build like this at 58 (once you have all your talents from the starter area):

Building up to this at 80 (3 in Subversion first for when you group, then finish Unholy before continuing in Blood):

I typically do 40% or more of a group's total damage in any instance with people as far as 5 levels above me. I was only about 5% behind an 80 frost DK last night in Nexus, UK and AN. I'm currently attempting to split out the 500MB of logs I've had running since I started my DK, so I'm hoping to have some WWS of my DK career soon.

Although, with the upcoming removal of the cooldown on Howling Blast, frost is quickly becoming very desirable for DPS and for tanking, perhaps a frost/unholy build or the tri-spec discussed on the Elitist Jerks forums.
