Advise Needed (am i doing the right thing)Follow

This may seem like a strange post to some people as I am currently a level 75 warlock.
I am fairly new to the game (playing since aug 08) and I decided to go with a warlock as my first char, I have pretty much spent most of my time in the game questing to level up as quick as I could there have been a couple of times that I have just wanted to give up on my lock as I found I was dying all the time but I struggled on and now I am coming up to the level where I will start raiding and doing more instances/heroics. I am posting this as I would like advice from more experienced lock players to see if I am going down the right path. I may sound like the worst player in the world hence the reason asking for advice I really like my lock and know they can be very powerful.

Gear.
Mainly I go for item buffs of intellect, stamina, spell power and critical strike.
Stamina = to increase health and compensate for cloth armour
Intellect = to increase mana
And to be honest not sure what spell power and critical strike do...lol

Tactics.
Pretty much no matter what I am doing be it questing, instance or very rarely PvP I fight like this –
Send in felgaurd, then cast curse of agony-corruption-immolate-searing pain (then depending on the mob level –incinerate) - and finish them off with my wand to save mana.
Pvp/Battlegrounds.
I pretty much SUCK at this...lol in duels (if I ever accept them) I pretty much get owned no matter the other class/level. In battle grounds I spend most of my time running back from the graveyard to join the rest of the battle. (Took me nearly a week to get 8000 honour points..lol.

Instances/raids
I seem to get on ok in these but want to increase my DPS.

Current stats.

Health – 11526
Mana – 11062
Str – 58
Agility – 59
Stamina – 607
Intellect – 519
Spirit – 287
Armour – 1476
Bonus damage – 861
Bonus healing – 748
Hit rating – 0
Crit chance – 19.73
Haste – 139
Mana regen – 263.

Am I going about things the right way?

Also is anyone able to link a good DPS talent build and spell rotaion.

Many thanks again all

Talon

What's your spec? I assume Demo, but you might want to link your armoury here so we can see it. It's very important to how you should go about things. If you don't know the armoury, it's a blizzard site where you can look any character/guild/item/whatever up: http://www.wowarmory.com/

As for spellpower, it works by making your spells hit harder. All spells have a (hidden) coefficient, which you use to calculate how much of your spellpower is added to the damage of the spell.
For example: Spell A does 500 damage if you read the description in your spellbook, it has a (hidden) coefficient of 120 and you have 1000 spellpower. Then your spell would hit for 500 + 1000*120 = 1700 damage. Therefore, the more spellpower the better.

Critical strike increases the chance that your spell will hit for double damage. Generally, it isn't too good for locks because dots cannot crit unless you take a specific talent deep in affliction. You might want to get haste instead, or at least get some of both. Haste means that you'll cast your spells faster -> more spells cast in the same timeframe and thus higher damage done.

The most important stat for you should be hit. It doesn't matter too much while you're levelling, but once you start on lvl 80 dungeons and heroics it becomes really important, because you'll be fighting mobs that are higher level than you, and therefore they have a higher chance to resist your spells. Hit decreases that chance. For heroics you need 158 (or less depending on your spec), for raids you'll need 447 to be hitcapped (ie when the mobs no longer have any chance to resist your spells). Once you're capped for what you want (158 if you don't want to raid), you should avoid getting any more hit, as it won't help you (107% chance to hit is no better than 100% chance to hit).

Edit:

Just noticed that you use searing pain in your spell rotation. Avoid this spell at all costs. It generates a lot of threat, meaning that the mob becomes more likely to attack you instead of the tank. There's times where it's very useful, but if you don't know when that is, avoid it. Use shadow bolt instead.
