AS a non-raiding person looking just to level right now and raid at a later time, what is the best option. I leveled as a combat sword and worked to get my merc swords which I hear are basically useless now since dagger/fist weapon is the new way to go.

I've read some of the different posts here and some say that combat dagger/fist is the way to go while some say mutilate. I don't have any decent daggers that i remember picking up so I'd need a build that would let me use my merc swords till I can get a decent dagger/fist weapon.

So do I follow theo's advice and go 5/51/5 combat dagger/fist or go 51/5/5 mutilate and learn a new spec that from what I have heard and read slightly out dps's combat dagger fist

What ever you do, don't level with Hunger for Fail. It's so retarded to keep up while leveling that it's not worth the migraine.

Level as mut/prep if you're going to level mut. You'll probably need to go sub or combat til 73 or so--when you start getting 97+ DPS weapons from quests--and then you'll be alright to go mut.

Mut with Wound/Wound is waaay faster than combat for leveling. I usually drop a mob inside a CS.

I vouch for muti/prep too, but I immediatly have to add I haven't tried combat. The thing with mutilate is that it's burst is so obscene you really should indeed be taking mobs down within the cheap shot timer. If I'm thinking in the right direction (so to speak), combat is more of an 'endurance' spec. While that would be pretty good for levelling, simply dropping your enemy before you need to engage in such a longevity battle makes your life a lot easier. Combat might be more effective when trying to solo 3-man elites, however.

I can vouch for that. I was (at the time) level 70-something in Howling Fjord, as Muti/Prep. Got a nice little quest to gank a Pirate for his... whatever. He committed suicide by bear and I had to gank the bear. Didn't quite work that well though... I got it down to 10-20% several times, with the use of PoTs and all manner of funny things and failed miserably every last time.

Then I spent the next five minutes sitting on my ***** stealthed, waiting for a guildie to show up. During that time, this tiny little gnome cunt came running into the cave, equal level to me. I decided not to engage in some lighthearted ripping-spines-out-of-nostrils-and-beat-gnome-to-death-with-it or "world PvP" as it's also known. Instead, I'd watch the gnome get eaten by a bear.

... holy ****. It took the gnome about not much time at all to rape the pirate and then make tiny bear filets. All without losing more than about 60% health. I was amazed. I know I had helluvalot more burst than she did, but that kind of survivability? Where the hell did she get that? I quickly fired up my trusty browser to armory the lass, and she had the same leveling gear I did, with a combat specc + different weapons. Poring over the build, I couldn't really figure out how she did it, but somehow Combat definitely is the way to go if you like to solo everything around you. Less PvP oriented, less burst, but apparently helluvalot better to kill giant polar bears with.

With this newfound realization, I got back into the game to find my guildie had come and gone, as I was apparently afk.
***** combat rogues. I'm ganking every bloody last one of them. On a totally unrelated note, LFG Suicidal Pirate + Bear.

As I am in the same boat as trollover, can I ask a few quick questions about this?

Could you link to a good Mut/Prep build at 70 & 80 (I am 72 ATM)? The (51/13/7) in the sticky I assume is a raid build and doesn't have prep.

Is it possible to have Mut and Prep at 72? In the Comp. discussion ThomasMagnum links a (45/5/11) as his "leveling with buddies" build (at 70) and it looks like Prep is still far off with the points at 72.

Lastly, could you give some quick advice on going from the 70 build to the 80? Such as xx points in such and such till 75 and then down Sub tree the rest of the way being sure to grab xyz as soon as possible.

Thanks much.

EDIT: Also a quick unrelated question: Do spreadsheets work pre-80? I never used one as I am a very casual gamer, but think as I get closer to 80 I should. And having asked that I think I will, I don't know, actually download one and see for myself..duh.

This is how my specc looked at 72. But this is sub-optimal for PvE, though. I specced like this because I'm more into PvP and spend most of my time looking for that respawning Alliance before I kill the questmobs. When I hit 80, it looked something like this. Again, mostly for PvP with soloing capability. Still very sub-optimal for PvE.

Stick with Sticky builds for leveling. There's at least one 70 build in there in addition to the 80 build. Just fill in the blanks as you level.

Yeah, that was pretty much what I planned to do (once I get a set of daggers for Mut), I just saw Theo reference Mut with Prep and wasn't sure how that one was specced since the ones in the sticky don't have Prep as far as I know. But as you say, going with the sticky builds is always a good move either way.

From another thread, here's my mutilate leveling build. Fast and efficient in my experience.
