Well I am fairly new to the hunter community and so far am having fun with a level 47 BM Troll Hunter. I enjoy my Main who is an 80 Prot Paladin for many reasons, one being the Lore that is tied in with the paladin class. I was wondering about Wow and Hunter Lore. Is there any Hunter lore? Any notaable characters in Wow Lore who were true hunters (not demon hunters)? Just curious.

Hunters are a bit of a mishmash of different ideas and character types, so that's a tough question to answer. Here are a few notable examples though.

With pets (BM?):

Rexxar (and Misha)

Nathanos Marris (now Blightcaller)

Without pets (MM?):

The Windrunner Sisters (Alleria, Sylvanas, Vereesa)

With traps (SV?):

Hemet Nesingwary

Casual (Not Really A Hunter):

Rhonin*

The WowWiki Hunter page lists Brann Bronzebeard as a notable hunter, but I really am not seeing it, and troll Shadowhunters are not exactly hunters (though looking at the page for those it seems that hunter Aspects may have a connection there). Trolls and Dwarfs do seem to be the two races with the strongest tradition of using ranged weapons, the High/Blood elves used to but seem to have rejected that part of their heritage in favor of magic use. In WCIII the basic unit for the Night Elves was the Archer, but I can't remember any named characters that fought in that style--the Night Elves have an affinity for nature in general, but not so much with the way of the hunter except as an offshoot of that.

Pretty much any character that called themselves a Ranger would be a Hunter in the class mechanics. Speccs doesn't enter into it at all, just whether or not the Character has any "companions" or not. Rexxar I wouldn't really call a Hunter, except for the fact that he has a few pets. He hasn't once that I know of taken a ranged weapon in hand.

The pet doesn't define us. It's the ranged capability that combined with at least a little melee survivability that turns us into Hunters (Rangers).

On a sidenote, now that Emodins/Lolknights are added as a Hero class, I really wouldn't mind another Hero class. Dark Ranger. Basically, Sylvanas style Hunters without pets but with different abilities than your normal Hunter. A few nastier stings and CC's but no pet.
