Frost DPS - what the hell is up?Follow

Hey there,

I've been dungeon-crawling and raiding a bit, half epic now..
But for some reason i have a few trouble with what i read here :P
Few questions:

first off: Why does everyone say blood is best dps spec? with my current semi-hybrid spec i do over 2k per second, topping everything but a hunter now and than. This includes Blood dps by atleast 20%

Second: My spec atm is 14/50/7, im totally in love with my critrate and stuff, but it seems to give me some downtime every 2 rotations, cause everything is on cooldown, does anyone have a tip for me?

and come on... CONSTRUCTIVE posting, im not asking you to tell me all the blood dps i top sucks, neither that i should respec to x/x/x without a GOOD reason

Hi there, sorry I can't explain what's up. I Tank as Frost, so I'm interested how you're doing that much damage. You must be real lucky with burst/crits or found a magic rotation. Would you mind sharing your rotation for if ever I have to DPS instead of Tank?

I know myself I hit a lull in my rotation tanking. I open with Death n Decay --> Icy Touch --> Plague Strike --> Pestilence --> *lull* --> Howling Blast --> Blood Boil --> Couple Obliterates n Rune Strikes --> Repeat w/out DnD.

A link to your armory would be helpful :P

Gear taken into consideration can have an impact on how a certain spec might work for one person and not another.

Let me first say that I'm currently in a deep love affair with Frost. So I'm not intending to be harsh or anything, but...

Currently available statistical analysis seems to show that Blood is slightly ahead in total DPS for raiding. That's not to say that any Blood-spec'd DK will always win out over any other-spec'd DK. But with ideal circumstances and equal equipment, Blood will average higher statistically.

Anecdotal statements are not evidence. You're not doing any substantive comparisons, so you can't say if you would do better or worse as another spec. At least, until you repec and run the same instances with the same group with the same gear again.

In the end: If you're pulling strong numbers what does it matter what a bunch of theorycrafted parses say? It seems to me that people are constantly getting wrapped up in what is "best" or which spec is "better" when, in the end, these terms have no real meaning beyond preference. If you're min/maxing then you know what you're looking for, but for the majority of players this isn't the case. The three trees are all equal enough for regular PvE stuff. Play which you like.

And 2k with mixed blue/purple gear at 80 doesn't sound out of the realm of possibilities from what I've seen. But, that's just anecdotal =)

frost is more crit based. if you have a fairly high crit rate you will see it do some incredible damage, but in a long fight it wont win.
i find that if you look at total dps from frost blood and unholy, in medium length fights or ones with adds unholy wins, it also wins out in boss fights where the ghoul doesnt get pwnd, in long single target fights blood pulls ahead, and frost seems to win out in short fights or fights with occasional adds.
over a full instance they come out pretty close, but in a boss fight people say go blood because it provides a great buff for a hunter or rogue and has the highest sustained dps which is usually more important in long fights.

I just respecced to frost dps last night because we didn't have our shammy and we had 4 melee DPSers, and i did hit first on the charts (all fights + overall). now i dont have a good comparison because as unholy i went 5/8/5 for tanking. i used the same gear however. normally i'm tied for first when i'm in my dps gear with some occasional OT as unholy. sorry no numbers at the moment i havent been saving parses lately.

im assuming if your worried about dps... your focusing dps

blade barrier -> butchery
toughness -> killing machine
frigid dreadplate -> killing machine
2 anticipation -> vicious strikes

are the best changes you can do in regards to dps

if you want my reasoning... read the talents... all those are avoidance talents, and im replacing them with dps talents lol

take what you like from that
