Help as a low level priestFollow

I am thinking about the decision I made to be a priest. I went on a quest today to kill boars and as I was fighting one a leopard came up and I was just about dead. Can anyone give me some advice on battle at the low levels, I am almost to 7. I really wanted to get shadowform. I realize a priest is a cloth class and takes patients, maybe thats all I need...

I think that being almost dead any class would have died at that level.

Just watch what mobs are around you before you start killing, but at times we all get attacked without warning and die.

It is just part of the game. The higher you get in levels the more abilities you will get to help you survive these sneak attacks.

That's why blizzard makes it not so bad if you do die. All you have to do is run back. Everybody dies sometimes.

Pull mobs to you while you are standing in a clear area. After pulling, put on your Power Word Shield. If you get in trouble, run until the mob loses interest. You will eventually get a spell called levitate that will let you jump off a cliff and float down gently. I've used that one many times to escape with my life.

You may be cloth, but you can shield and heal yourself. Those are pretty powerful abilities in a fight. Also, don't get discouraged. Being a priest is awesome. It gets better and better as you level up.

One of the reasons I enjoy playing a priest (or any healer class for that matter) is that it forces you to make snap decisions between healing and damaging. A good choice can lead to victory, a bad choice can lead to the graveyard. As Dadanox pointed out, you have the shield and heal capability. This gives you the time and opportunity to re-evaluate the battle, especially when other mobs join in. The choice to fight or flee is yours, but at least you will buy yourself some time to make that decision.

I would suggest watching your mana and knowing how much mana it costs to shield/heal. If you don't have enough mana to cast spells, your choices are very limited.

Also, get a wand if you are able to. I don't think I got one until around L15. Made a world of difference as far as saving mana for heals.

Agreed.

Wands are great because they use no mana, and don't need any ammo. As a priest, get a good wand (from the AH if necessary).

Take up some gathering professions as soon as you get to a major city. I'd suggest mining and skinning to start. You can always change later. Sell everything you gather at the AH and you will have the money for all your skills, your mount, and that good wand.

Other than the wand, while leveling, just use gear you get off drops and quests. There is no need for a leveling priest to be buying a lot of gear at the AH. You will just out level it and waste a lot of cash.

What is with people saying a priest is a weak class and a mage is far better in the long run? A priest dying where a mage doesnt.

That all depends on what you want. Mages generally deal more DPS in high end raids, but priests are more wanted because healers are scarce. No class is 'better' than the other though.

Just watch those mages start crying when they can't get a healer for a run.

With inscription new I'd take up herbalism and skinning. Peacebloom is going for 10g a stack on my server!

Priest is hard to level but great fun when you get higher up. Mage can out DPS us don't get me wrong but we have shield and heals which you will love, a lot. The wand advice is the best I ever got. Forgive the newbie bit, I have no idea if this is your first toon but if it is this will help a lot.

Low level wands you can get from enchanters or on the AH. The auction house (AH) sells all sorts of items and you can ask a guard in any major city for directions to the one there (just right click on the guys with scrolls over them when you hover over and you can find most things like a mailbox to pick up your auction items won). Major cities are Stormwind, Ironforge, Darnassus, Exodar (Alliance) and Orgrimmar, Undercity, Thunderbluff, Silvermoon (Horde)

Lesser Magic Wand is the first wand for level 5 and requires 1 simple wood and one lesser magic essence which you can often buy at an enchanting vendor in the capital city. Low level enchanters usually make these to level so you may be able to find someone to make you one if you can get the mats assuming you cant get one on AH.

You can also buy a wand from wand vendors but these are not as good wands as they have no +stats just simple DPS. I think they are available from level 10(ish) There is a wand vendor in each capital city except Thunder Bluff and Darnassus.

Overall just keep at it, you will die but you will enjoy it as you get higher. If you can get in a good friendly guild you should be able to find people there who can help you out once you get higher. Also don't be afraid to group. Groups are saviours of priests although you may work better healing in a group to begin with. If you need help put out a request on the main channel for the area. type /1 into the speech box followed by a message like "looking for group for X quest" or "struggling with X can anyone help please?" you can also do /s to speak to nearby players or /w therename to send them a private message. Talking to someone before joining/inviting them to a group is common courtesy. If you accept you can click on them either in the game or there name in chat and then right click and hit invite.

Also when you log out try and log out in an inn. These are spread throughout most places and you will notice a ZZZ symbol beside your portrait bar once you enter one. This means you are rested and your exp bar will turn blue. The longer you are in the inn the more blue bar you will have. A blue or rested bar gives you double experience for all mobs you kill so this will help you level much faster as well.

Good Luck!
