I haven't seen anything yet as far as gearing up for Heroics/Raiding in WotLK.

I have compiled a list of stuff that I consider easy to get which does not require any world drops or dungeon drops. The purpose of this list is to show you how to get crit immune by the time you are LEVEL 78 (that's right, 2 levels EARLY!!!) These may not represent the BEST items available for the slots in question, but they are all pretty easy to get:

Head

Tempered Saronite Helm (crafted) Defense Rating +83

Neck

Blood infused Pendant (quest reward from group quest in Grizz Hills) Defense Rating +29

Shoulders

Tempered Saronite Shoulders (crafted) Defense Rating +32

Back

Cloak of Peaceful Resolutions (Wyrmrest Honored) Defense Rating +43

Chest

Ivory-Reinforced Chestguard (Kalu'ak Honored) Defense Rating +56

Wrists

Tempered Saronite Bracers (crafted) Defense Rating +48

Hands

Daunting Handguards (crafted) Defense Rating +71

Waist

Tempered Saronite Belt (crafted) Defense Rating +57

Legs

Daunting Legplates (crafted) Defense Rating +88

Boots

Tempered Saronite Boots (crafted) Defense Rating +36

Ring #1

Kurzel's Warband (quest reward for DTK dungeon quest) Defense Rating +19

Ring #2

Ring of Misinterpreted Gestures (quest reward for solo quest in Sholazar) Defense Rating +26

Trinket #1

Dabiri's Enigma (old Netherstorm group quest) Defense Rating +30

Trinket #2

Whatever you want

Weapon

Hammer of Quiet Mourning (Zul'Drak quest) Defense Rating +19

Shield

Saronite Bulwark (Crafted) Defense Rating +31

All of these items are readily available by the time you hit 78. The total defense rating from the items in the above list with NO ENCHANTS and NO GEMS is 668. At level 80, 668 defense will not give you quite 540 defense but it will be darn close. I believe the actual number to give +140 defense it 689 defense rating. The easiest way to accomplish that (although a bit expensive) is Enchant Chest - Greater Defense (+22 Defense Rating) which would bring you up to 690 defense rating which IS crit immune.

That leaves you free to add an Eternal Belt Buckle and add a cheap +24 Stam gem, and use whatever enchants/item enhancements you want on all of the other slots.

Once you hit 80 and have the money or mats laying around, you may want to upgrade to some of the purple crafted tanking pieces from a Blacksmith. These actually have a bit lower defense, so you may have to take advantage of things like the Aldor/Scryers shoulder enchant for defense and the KoT head enchant for defense to make up the difference until you have the rep for the WotLK equivalents.

Basically, the point of this is to show that by level 78 you can already have everything you need in order to be crit immune when you hit 80 and you can still have plenty of enchants/item enhancements available to simply pump up your stamina.

Having 535 defense the second you hit 80 (540 by the time you have been 80 long enough to get those last 5 points) shouldn't be any problem at all, and you should have around 20k health and 20k armor or so... more if you upgrade to a few craftable tanking purples when you hit 80.

If people would like to add items to this list to show other options, that is fine with me. I did not include any rep items that required Revered or Exalted rep because you are most likely not going to be revered or exalted with many Northrend factions until you have been 80 for at least a short while. Also, I didn't create links in the list to the actual items mentioned (probably should have, but I did this quickly from work... hehe) so if someone would like to improve this by doing that, it would be appreciated.

Hopefully any Paladin Tanks that are still leveling/gearing up will find this useful!

I just wanted to add that once you are level 78 and have all of the above-mentioned equipment you can easily tank regular Halls of Lightning and hope that the last boss drops
http://wow.allakhazam.com/search.html?q=seal+of+the+Pantheon which will raise your defense rating by another +65 and make it easier to go to those crafted tanking purples that have higher strength and stamina but less defense. This trinket IS a random dungeon drop off of Loken, so I didn't include it in my original list, but it is one heck of a tanking trinket.

One thing I've been really happy with is that most Paladin tanks seem to be able to research this so far, which is excellent :D It's useful to show people flat out how simple it can be too :D Now if only a certain DK tank payed attention to this information two days ago when everyone was offering it :D

Yes Losie, most Pally tanks are finding it easy to research this. I just figured I would throw it up in one easy place so that newer Pally Tanks or ones that haven't even purchased Wrath yet could find it easily. This list could also be used by Warrior tanks.

For the DK's it is a bit harder (especially for the bone-headed ones like the one you were referring to... hehe) since they don't use a shield and their weapon is unlikely to have defensive stats. With this list and a few more +def enchants, even they can get to 689 defense rating without TOO much work.

I am basically assuming there are still a fair number of WoW players that won't be getting LK for another 13 days or so, so hopefully this makes their research even easier!

This is a good list also. Not necessarily for pally tanks but I think it applies anyways.
