Mage Change for Next PatchFollow

#27 Dec 12 2008 at 9:09 AM Rating: Good
Sounds to me that maybe we have found a little balance in our 3 trees. Fire/FFB for raids, Arcane for 5-man (and PvP) and Frost for Pvp, solo, and leveling.

Our overall dps seems to be competitive, especially with recent changes to hunters. It will be interesting to see how arcane pans out in PvP.

I for one, can't complain right now. Its nice to see mages get some love.

frost retained viability throughout BC for all play types simply on the undeniable strength of its versatility. i don't think arcane ever was serious competition in pvp, let alone fire. frost did allow AOE farming for rep or mats in certain locations, and, while doable with any spec, frost was easily best at killing the giants in skettis (for an elite example). because of fight duration and tactics, frost's damage output was sufficient for any group content up to and including kara, and perhaps for some particular bosses vastly preferable.

nerfs to AOE and a generally shatter-dependant design combined with outrageously short trash duration and never-before-seen mana pool problems have weakened frost's group productivity beyond usefulness.

giving fire such an incredibly powerful mana tool is fairly exasperating for those of us *ahem* who have always held that fire should have remained bursty and frost economical. somehow, arcane has evolved dramatically to become an absolutely unparalleled burst tree, while fire is now an established endurance group tree and frost is relegated to pvp by sole grace of its marginal survivability.

it isn't even that frost has certain important tools (counter spell, POM, or molten armor) only that it's all that's left.

so, no, i wouldn't say that this has been old news since 07, only that a decisive gift of mana to another tree would officially condemn frost in any damage-output market.

looks like i'm bidding pvp a long-overdue farewell for at least the next year. it'll give my frostbolt button a rest at least.

Oohhhhh the respec bill, haha! Never thought it would be a problem for a strictly dps class but I'm finding myself redistributing talent points nearly every time I log on. Arcane seems best for 2v2, FFB is great for raids and pve in general but still there are some fights where having the control frost spec provides can be phenomenal, and I like playing frost in BGs!

To be fair, this is a bit over dramatic. Dps drops substantially with frost spec but it's more than adequate for killing the bosses in Naxx, OS, and the Vault, at least on normal setting, provided the rest of your group is up to par, just like it was OK for Kara when BC came out. 2-3k dps isn't a problem on bosses in a buffed up raid setting, and you will probably come out on the bottom of the damage taken chart (small consolation I know, considering the longer the mob is alive the more damage it does to the raid).

As for 5 mans, I aoe till I go blind from the blizzards. I top the charts pretty consistenly w/frost unless there is a boomkin spamming aoe or a good hunter (which both are able to do more dps as a result of my improved blizzard slowing mobs to a virtual halt and stacking on winter's chill for hurricane).

I totally agree with you. That is why I can't wait for dual speccing. I will have one spec for max raid dps (FFB) and the other for soloing, PvP, and heroics (frost or arcane).

Once this feature comes out, our class will have found a nice balance. Until then, its pony up for the respec bill.
