WOTLK Heroic tankingFollow

#1 Dec 08 2008 at 8:14 AM Rating: Decent
Ok I am Prot specced and level 80 and we are starting to run some heroics and looking to start Naxx shortly. My question is on my gear and what stats I should have to be able to effectively tank heroics and Naxx. Here is my profile http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Malygos&n=Tastyhammer. I was asking for some advice after last night. We tried to run Heroic Culling of Strathholme and we basically got up to 1 pull before the 3rd boss. I was getting eaten alive during the majority of the instance. My concern is that maybe its a gear issue. I have 552 Defense and 22204 Armor plus around 21500 Health unbuffed. I have put my tanking gear together for WOTLK and based it on reaching a min of 540 def while adding STA and STR as secondary stats. Is this the wrong approach? I had a lackluster set of gear from TBC so I didnt start off with the epic tanking set alot of people had. I really want to improve my gear and be an effective tank. Please help if you can. As a side note I have been looking for any tanking guides that have been put together for WOTLK and have yet to see one for a paladin. Maybe I am not looking in the right place and if I am not then I apologize.

If you have defense at least 540 (which you do) and have around 22k health and armor unbuffed (which you do) you are ready to at least START heroics and probably do some of Naxx. Mostly it is a question of being experienced and having a good healer, as well as doing the easier heroics (like Nexus) before you do the harder ones.

Have you been Prot before or did you just respec at 80? If you just respecced, you probably don't have the experience to manage pulls and keep everything under control that you would if you had been Prot for quite a while. Also, for heroics you have to have a darn good healer that knows exactly what they are doing.

If you are new to tanking, I would recommend doing some level 80 non-heroic dungeons just to get some tanking experience. Your stats are fine for several heroics (see a thread that ran a while ago about which heroics are easy and which are hard in WotLK) and they will improve even more as you upgrade your gear.

From what I hear, several wings of Naxx are not too hard either, but some are, so you may want to plan a Naxx run with that in mind and do the easier parts first and hope for some gear upgrades.

If you have been Prot for some time and are used to it, just make sure you have a healer with a good amount of spellpower that knows what he/she is doing and the easier heroics shouldn't be too bad at all.

Your stats seem to be fine for this level of instance. The key is to tank the group but kill the casters first. The big fatty isn't the guy who will kill you it the caster in the back. Get your ranged DPS to burn down the casters first even if they are not in your consecration. You also have to make sure that none of the mobs get behind you as this doubles their damage. If you keep your holy shield up and do these things it will be up tho your healers and DPS to guarantee success.

Your stats are fine, better than mine when i hit 80(hell i'm still using 4-5 pieces of lvl 70 gear) and immediately ran 3-4 heroics. Have had 0 problems with threat or survivability(even with my dps oriented tank spec), just have to bring a healer that knows how to deal with heroic damage.

Check this out, might help...

http://maintankadin.failsafedesign.com/viewtopic.php?p=289016

even though uncrush is off the table, the balance it provides in respect to block and somewhat dodge should still be a goal...see the link for more details

Link might also help you with other items you may not have thought of, such as rotation and talents, etc...On the surface your gear seemed fine for starting, but didn't really have time to review talents, block seemed a little low compare to dodge and parry.

But the other posters mentioned relevant points, alot does depend on the healer, how much xp they have as a healer and how close they meet their pre-nax/heroics goals. And I do feel you on your issues, and its always nice to see someone wishing to improve like this.
